Hoist and Crane Service Technician
The Hoist and Crane Service Technician installs, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs hoists and cranes in a variety of industrial environments. This field-based role starts and ends at your home, with paid travel from the time you leave until you return. You will use a company-provided vehicle and mobile app to receive job assignments, complete service work, and document repairs while delivering professional, customer-focused service on-site.
Responsibilities
- Travel from home to customer sites using a company-provided vehicle, clocking in and out through a mobile app when you begin and end your workday.
- Review daily assignments in the app, including both quoted and non-quoted jobs, and report to the office for further instructions when no job is listed.
- Execute quoted jobs by following detailed scopes of work that outline the issues, required parts, tools, and estimated time to complete the repair.
- Respond to non-quoted service calls, such as cranes that will not move or lift properly, and perform thorough troubleshooting to identify root causes and implement effective repairs.
- Inspect, service, and repair hoists and cranes, including mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical components, to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Use hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment to perform maintenance, adjustments, and component replacements on cranes and hoists.
- Perform electrical troubleshooting on systems that may include PLCs, VFDs, contractors, 460V circuits, electric motors, and 3-phase power.
- Apply lockout/tagout procedures to ensure a safe working environment while performing maintenance and repairs.
- Interpret and work from blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to diagnose issues and plan repairs.
- Conduct crane inspections and document findings, noting any deficiencies, safety concerns, or recommended corrective actions.
- Retrieve tools, parts, and equipment such as scissor lifts from the plant or office as needed and return them after completing jobs.
- Operate and work from scissor lifts and man lifts at heights up to approximately 100 feet to access cranes and hoists.
- Prepare clear and accurate reports on repairs performed, parts used, and recommendations for additional service or preventive maintenance.
- Communicate professionally with customers on-site, explaining issues, proposed solutions, and the value of recommended services.
- Proactively identify potential issues or opportunities for improvement in customer equipment and suggest solutions rather than waiting for failures.
- Participate in an on-call rotation, responding to after-hours service requests as required by a 24/7 facility environment.
- Maintain basic personal tools as specified by the company tool list and keep them in good working condition.
- Work safely in industrial environments, following all safety procedures and using appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Perform physically demanding tasks, including extensive walking, climbing, and lifting items weighing 50 pounds or more.
Essential Skills
- Hands-on experience working with cranes, hoists, or similar industrial lifting equipment in a service or maintenance capacity.
- Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to repair and maintain mechanical components on hoists and cranes.
- Practical knowledge of hydraulics, including troubleshooting and repair of hydraulic systems used in lifting equipment.
- Electrical troubleshooting skills, including experience with PLCs, VFDs, contractors, 460V systems, electric motors, and 3-phase power.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams to guide troubleshooting and repairs.
- Experience performing crane inspections and documenting findings in accordance with company or industry standards.
- Proficiency with hand tools and field service tools required for installation, maintenance, and repair of industrial equipment.
- Knowledge and practical application of lockout/tagout procedures to ensure safe work on energized equipment.
- Comfort working at significant heights, including on scissor lifts up to approximately 30 feet and man lifts up to approximately 100 feet.
- Physical ability to perform extensive walking, frequent climbing, and lifting of 50 pounds or more in demanding environments.
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation, including responding to service calls outside standard working hours.
- Strong soft skills, including clear communication, professionalism with customers, and the ability to build trust on-site.
- Self-starter mindset with the ability to work independently, identify issues proactively, and take initiative without constant direction.
- Ambitious, solution-oriented approach with a focus on delivering high-quality service and identifying additional ways to support customers.
