Summary of

Job Duties

The Locksmith is responsible for maintaining the University’s campus-wide lock systems for all buildings, including inspection, installations, operations, and repairs of door hardware and locking systems.

This position may also assist concerning issues with locking cabinet doors and file cabinets. All departments depend on the Locksmith to maintain the security of all campus buildings. Because Facilities Management personnel interact with virtually every area of campus life, a pleasant relationship that is supportive of the Facilities Management objective is essential.

Qualifications
  • Formal education equivalent of a high school diploma
  • Experience and/or training with repair and maintenance of locking devices including shop maintenance, inventory, key production, re‑keying, core replacement, etc.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license and have the ability to drive a vehicle.

Other job‑related education and/or experience may be substituted for all or part of these basic requirements, except for certification or license requirements.

Preferred Education & Experience
  • Vocational locksmith training
Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Make recommendations as to the effectiveness and appropriateness of various types of locking devices, including researching new technologies.
  • Work with the departments and assigned personnel to determine the best access and security needs for entry into buildings, offices, and other assigned areas.
  • Maintain detailed records of the staff and locks they have access to.
  • Track and distribute keys accurately.
  • Verify all keys and other devices are returned to the University when staff terminates.
  • Prepare locks as needed, including key locks, electronic locking systems, locking cabinets and file cabinets, and dial combination locks.
  • Code lock cores, operate key reproducing equipment, make keys, re‑key locks for security purposes.
  • Maintain records of keys and matching locks.
  • Install new locks and door hardware as needed (new constructions, remodel projects, breakage, etc.).
  • Perform maintenance work on lock systems and door hardware as required.
  • Repair and disassemble locks, and replace worn tumblers, springs, and other parts, as well as repair and adjust door‑mounted closers and floor closers.
  • Maintain the security and software updates of the computer systems, including floor plans, lock and key assignments, and electronic access control systems.
  • Determine schedule of lock inspections and maintenance to ensure timely care of all locking systems campus‑wide.
  • Maintain a log of inspections performed and corrective work.
  • Manage outsourcing repair and maintenance work to vendors, including receiving quotes, overseeing work, and processing invoices.
  • Inspect for and report any tampering with locking devices.
  • Maintain the inventory of parts and replacements for locking devices; order through purchasing as necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of locksmith methods, practices, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of locksmith laws and regulations.
  • Ability to operate machinery or equipment necessary for key making.
  • Ability to use the key cutter, portable drills, welder, computer, and miscellaneous hand tools necessary in the locksmith trade.
  • Ability to maintain inventory of needed parts and tools.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply lock maintenance and repair manuals, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to prepare, present, and review oral and written information and reports.
  • Knowledge of computers and software applications, specifically MS Word, Excel, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and key management software and access control management software.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
