(Part-Time, Non-Exempt)

$17.05 - $22.75 per hour

Position Summary:

Under the close supervision of the Arts and Enrichment Coordinator, this position teaches art and enrichment classes for all ages in both group and individual settings. It also teaches specialized arts and enrichment classes, birthday parties, and special events offsite. The position primarily teaches ceramics classes and may teach other classes based on individual expertise. Classes are normally in the evenings and on weekends, but some may be offered during the day.

This position teaches wheel throwing and may also teach handbuilding when needed.

  • Responsible for planning and instruction of art and enrichment classes for participants with varying levels of skill and ability. Must participate in each class and with every level; adapting instruction techniques to meet the needs of participants.
  • Maintains course records and rosters.
  • Communicates with co‑workers, patrons and coordinators effectively and efficiently.
  • Provides students with tools and raw materials to produce their own art, and teaches them how to use tools and materials properly.
  • Help promote arts and enrichment programming.
  • Ensures that appropriate equipment/supplies are available for classes and events; sets up and takes down. Performs required cleaning.
  • Inspects and reports tool/equipment condition on a regular basis to ensure safe use.
  • Monitors supply inventory and ensures responsible use of supplies to prevent waste.
  • Is prepared, creative and energized when teaching.
  • Provides a safe learning environment and manages the classroom effectively; keeps students in line of vision at all times.
  • Enforces safety and program rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Recognizes emergency and dangerous situations and reacts quickly and calmly; administers first aid as needed and completes Accident/Incident report.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment and resolves complaints efficiently and timely.
  • Corrects or informs supervisor of any facility hazards; communicates issues/complaints to supervisor as needed.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations.
  • Travels to offsite special events to instruct and lead art and enrichment classes.
  • Attends work on a regular, reliable and punctual basis; substitutes for co‑workers when available and is responsible for securing substitutes for all scheduled and published shifts if unable to work.

Education and/or

Experience:

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have at least one (1) year of teaching experience in art.
  • Experience teaching art and/or enrichment is preferred.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of professional teaching experience in art.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid are preferred.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License or have the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.

Necessary

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of teaching and learning techniques and methodologies.
  • Knowledgeable of positive interaction techniques with children, students, parents, adult and senior students, and staff. Demonstrates use of these techniques in all interactions.
  • Can work with students in a constructive and caring manner while creating unique and fun art projects and teaching safety in the classroom.
  • Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults.
  • Must be flexible and able to handle multiple tasks and conflicting priorities.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
