PositionSenior Research Chemist: participate in and lead technical projects, develop new products and formulations for Johns Manville Engineered Products (EP) and Insulation Systems (IS). Design and conduct pilot/plant trials and provide technical services to meet customer or operational needs.
Your Day-to-Day- Participate in or lead cross-functional teams to execute technical projects in binders and nonwovens
- Travel to manufacturing plants to apply technical expertise to product or process development projects
- Present project updates internally and to customers
- Provide internal technical service for operations when product/process issues or customer complaints arise for existing and new products
- Perform hands-on work with laboratory and pilot equipment
- Use statistical tools to design experiments and analyze data
- Collect property and process data via material characterization techniques and develop structure/process/property relationships
- May perform other related duties as assigned
- Bachelor’s degree in polymer science, chemistry, materials science or related field with at least 5 years of R&D experience
- Master’s degree or PhD with 2+ years of relevant industrial experience preferred
- Solid knowledge of chemical reactions, synthesis and characterization; extensive knowledge of chemical analysis and mechanical evaluation
- Experience with Design of Experiments (DOE) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
- Experience working with production operations and business partners; proven cross-functional project leadership and ability to meet aggressive deliverables
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; strong presentation skills
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Plant trial experience preferred
- Moderate to heavy travel required (10-20%)
Work is conducted in a research laboratory with potential exposure to plant environments including cold, heat, high noise levels, moving parts, heights, dust/mist/gas/fumes, and extensive walking or climbing.
