Senior Research Chemist

Pay Range
: $-$ (annual)

This is the base salary pay range that an applicant can expect to make upon hire. Pay within this range will vary based upon relevant experience, skills, and education among other factors. In addition, this position is eligible for an incentive bonus.

Position Overview

The function of the Senior Research Chemist's role is to participate/lead in technical projects, develop new products and formulations to support Johns Manville Engineered Products (EP) and Insulation Systems (IS) businesses, design and conduct pilot/plant trials, and provide technological services to meet customer or operational needs.

Your Day-to-Day
  • Participate in or lead cross‑functional teams to execute technical projects in the areas of binders and nonwovens
  • Travel to manufacturing plants to apply technical expertise to product or process development projects
  • Present project updates internally to peers or externally to customers
  • Provide internal technical service for operations when product/process issues or customer complaints arise for existing and new products
  • Hands‑on work with laboratory and pilot equipment
  • Use statistical tools to design experiments and analyze data
  • Use material characterization techniques to collect property and process data; and develop structure/process/property relationships
  • May be required to perform other related duties as assigned
What You Bring to the Team
  • Bachelor's degree in polymer science, chemistry, materials science or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of research and development experience
  • Master's degree or PhD with 2+ years of relevant industrial experience preferred
  • Solid knowledge of chemical reactions and techniques for chemical synthesis and characterization
  • Extensive knowledge of chemical analysis and mechanical evaluation
  • Experience with statistical tools such as Design of Experiments (DOE) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA)
  • Experience in working directly with production operations and business partners
  • Proven ability to use multi‑disciplinary approach for problem solving
  • Proven project management skills
  • Proven ability to lead cross functional project teams and to meet aggressive program deliverables
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Plant trial experience preferred
  • Moderate to heavy travel required (10-20%)
  • Work environment is typical of a research laboratory. When working in a plant, may be exposed to environmental conditions of cold, heat, high noise levels, moving mechanical parts, heights, dust/mist/gas/fumes, extensive walking or climbing, etc.
