Responsibilities
  • Provide professional mental health services to inmates, including formal and informal evaluations, diagnostic assessments, and clinical interventions;
  • Record accurate information system mental health needs levels, including psychiatric and developmental disability needs level codes;
  • Offer group, brief, and individual therapy and crisis intervention, and participate in 24‑hour Mental Health On‑Call Rotation;
  • Arrange emergency and non‑emergency transfers for inmates with acute mental health needs;
  • Provide clinical direction to non‑clinical staff in mental health care and treatment of inmates;
  • Ensure continuity of care by making appropriate referrals and providing necessary documentation for receiving units, facilities, or agencies;
  • Document both handwritten and electronic records accurately and promptly;
  • Monitor inmate treatment and listen to inmate concerns, providing counseling and direction;
  • Promote and maintain safety and security of the clinical and correctional environment via conscious observations and sensitive item contraband control;
  • Report violations of safety and security to supervisors, attend training programs as assigned, including self‑defense courses for self‑protection skills.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in counseling, social work, psychology, or marriage and family therapy; provide transcribed copies of transcripts;
  • Current, valid permit or license from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Licensed Psychologist).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's or doctoral degree from a program accredited by CACREP, CSWE, AAMFT/COAMFTE, or APA;
  • License eligibility as a Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, or Licensed Psychologist;
  • Experience providing mental health treatment in a correctional environment.
Required Competencies
  • Ability to provide professional mental health or sex inmate treatment;
  • Efficiency and independence;
  • Participation in 24‑hour Mental Health On‑Call Rotation;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and collaboration across facilities and external agencies;
  • Comprehensive clinical documentation;
  • Maintenance of required registration, permit, or licensure;
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of inmates;
  • Proficiency in reading, understanding, and communicating in English;
  • Creation of accessible documents following plain language guidelines with accessibility considerations;
  • Self‑control, emotional stability, and resilience under high‑pressure, potentially violent situations;
  • Tolerance to stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction.
