Heavy Equipment Operator, Maintenance Worker, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Description Under general supervision, operates construction and maintenance equipment including excavating, grading, trenching, loading and related operations according to required standards; performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance tasks; makes minor mechanical adjustments in the field; performs related duties as required. This vacancy will be mainly assigned to street sweeping.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSEquipment Operators perform skilled tasks that involve operation of assigned equipment as the primary responsibility. Incumbents may be utilized to operate other equipment and assist in the performance of other skilled to unskilled maintenance work, but such responsibilities are subordinate to the primary tasks involving operation of assigned equipment. Equipment Operators train the less experienced staff on equipment operation and maintenance/construction tasks and may lead the work of a crew as assigned.
Examplesof Duties
(includes but are not limited to the following)
- Operates construction equipment such as dump truck, backhoe, roller, bulldozer, scraper, grader, and front-end loaders for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, sidewalks, street trees, curbs, gutters, water lines, reservoirs and appurtenances.
- Excavates around electric and gas lines.
- Drives a truck and trailer to haul equipment to and from job locations.
- As assigned, drives motor sweeper on a specified route.
- Performs special sweeps for glass in roadway, cement spills, and other debris.
- Reports on cars, trees, and pavement that may impede street sweeping operations.
- Makes minor adjustments along the route to motor sweeper equipment reporting any breakage and the need for more complicated adjustments or repair.
- As assigned, operates vacuum and/or jet rodder to clean sewers and storm drains.
- Checks job site for potential hazards, determines precautions for safe equipment operation and performs assignments in accordance with safety requirements and job site conditions.
- Performs skilled work in the operation of the assigned equipment according to work schedule and general instructions.
- Performs various tasks involved in the routine preventative maintenance and minor repair of the assigned equipment, including greasing and lubrication, changing oil and filters, changing tires and/or brooms, replacing belts and hoses, and maintaining fluid levels.
- Coordinates activities with other department staff.
- Identifies equipment and materials needed for assigned projects.
- Maintains records of work completed, materials and equipment used on projects.
- Assists in training new operators.
- Directs the work of semi skilled personnel assigned to assist with a project.
- May be assigned to assist other maintenance crews and operate other motorized equipment as necessary.
- Performs a variety of general skilled and semi skilled field maintenance work as a crew member when not assigned to equipment operation.
Education and/or
Experience:
Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for acceptable job performance. Example combinations include:
Equivalent to graduation from high school and two years of experience operating a variety of construction equipment.
Knowledge of: Considerable knowledge of the mechanical operation of the assigned power-driven equipment; occupational hazards and routine safety precautions; safe work practices; uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment; traffic laws, ordinances and rules involved in truck and construction equipment operation.
