Breastfeeding Peer Counselor – Community Action Program Belknap-Merrimack Counties (CAPBM)
Location: Littleton & Berlin,
Hours: Monday‑Friday, up to 15 hours per week.

A Day in the Life as a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor:
- Provides information, benefits, and reasons to breastfeed to pregnant and post‑partum women in accordance with Agency policies, USDA Breastfeeding Training Curriculum, and WIC protocols, offering face‑to‑face counseling, telephone support, or breastfeeding classes and support groups.
- Adheres to WIC USDA Breastfeeding Training Curriculum and NH Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program requirements, referring issues beyond scope to the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program Coordinator, nutritionist, or community resources as appropriate.
- Oversees a caseload of WIC participants, making routine contact and providing basic breastfeeding information and support, including benefits, barrier resolution, and early successful breastfeeding strategies.
- Attends clinics to offer in‑person services and contacts participants by phone on non‑clinic days.
- Contacts postpartum women by phone or office appointment to assist with initiating breastfeeding, encourage continuation, respond to concerns, and arrange follow‑up contacts as outlined in NH Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Maintains accurate records of all contacts and completes weekly activity worksheets, entering information into the StarLINC System for WIC in a timely manner.
- Attends required Agency meetings, WIC BFPC monthly staff meetings, state‑sponsored breastfeeding peer counseling meetings, special conferences or in‑services on breastfeeding to increase knowledge and skills.
Requirements:
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalency credential required. - Experience:
Six months of related experience; currently or has previously been a breastfeeding mother who has participated in the WIC program. - Skills:
Ability to use computer and office software applications. - Characteristics:
Ability to work independently outside the WIC clinic setting. - Technical:
Ability to provide peer counseling activities in a courteous, professional, and non‑judgmental manner.
Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required.
