Position Summary

The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for complex accounting activities, including general ledger maintenance, loan accounting activities, financial reporting, account reconciliations, and support for audits and special projects. This position helps ensure compliance with GAAP, applicable regulatory requirements, and established internal controls. This role reports to an Accounting Department Supervisor or above and supports accurate transaction processing, timely reconciliations, and reliable financial and regulatory reporting.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Support:

  • Serve as a technical accounting resource for staff accountants and business partners by providing guidance on accounting policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Collaborate with team members to achieve department objectives and support the timely completion of accounting activities and reporting requirements.
  • Lead or participate in accounting projects, process improvements, and system enhancements designed to increase efficiency and strengthen internal controls.
  • Promote a collaborative and high-performing team environment through knowledge sharing, cross-training, and cross-functional partnership.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and perform complex accounting activities within assigned areas, which may include general ledger maintenance, loan accounting activities, cash and liquidity-related accounting, account reconciliations, investments, fixed assets, and regulatory reporting.
  • Prepare and post complex journal entries and verify the accuracy and completeness of general ledger activity.
  • Perform detailed account reconciliations and variance analyses on a monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Prepare or review assigned financial statements, management reports, and regulatory reports, including Call Reports and local agency reporting schedules.
  • Support the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, ensuring timeliness and accuracy.
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory reporting requirements, including requirements established by the FFIEC, FDIC, DFPI, and Federal Reserve.
  • Research and resolve complex accounting discrepancies and elevate significant or unresolved matters to management.
  • Provide accounting support for system conversions and updates, regulatory changes, new products, and related general ledger account or product-code implementations.
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable accounting standards, banking regulations, regulatory reporting requirements, and industry best practices.
  • Develop and maintain procedures, reconciliations, work papers, and other documentation for assigned accounting functions.

Compliance and Internal Controls:

  • Perform assigned accounting responsibilities in accordance with internal control policies, Bank procedures, and applicable local, state, federal, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support internal and external audits and regulatory examinations by preparing schedules, work papers, and supporting documentation.
  • Identify control exceptions, reconciliation differences, and unusual accounting activity, and communicate findings to management.
  • Participate in special projects and system upgrades, as assigned.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a banking or financial services environment.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and familiarity with bank regulatory requirements.
