Pay Range

$129,150 - $196,476 Annually

$129,150 - $163,764 Annually for the TSS.

$154,950 - $196,476 Annually for the TSS.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Hazardous Material Management Area (HMMA) Manager. You will manage and operate the HMMA, a key facility for National Ignition Facility (NIF) radiological maintenance and radiological waste handling which supports the National Ignition Facility, 24/7 operations. The HMMA Manager performs two key roles; HMMA Manager and NIF Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Manager (RHWM) ensuring proper HMMA decontamination, maintenance, waste and tritium processing systems are maintained and operated in a safe and efficient manner.

This position will be filled at either the TSS.
2 or TSS.
3 level depending on qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

You will
  • Maintain good order and discipline in the HMMA and ensure that all work is being performed using proper safety and radiological controls, which includes training and qualifying all NIF Fume Operators.
  • Author and manage Work Permits as Responsible Individual (RI) for HMMA user facility operations, schedule and prioritize HMMA resources, and perform maintenance, system management, and procedure updates for Fume Hood, GDE (General Decontamination Enclosure), TPS (Tritium Processing System), and PPCE (Plenum Plug Contamination Control Enclosure), Contaminated Wastewater System, HMMA Demineralized Water System, and HMMA Water Wash Systems.
  • Use multiple techniques, survey for release a myriad of radioactive diagnostic components to routinely include but not limited to ADDS (Automated Damage Debris Shield), FSDS (Fused Silica Debris Shield), Visar Blast Windows, and Armor Glass;
    Use HMMA Water Wash equipment to disassemble and de-contaminate parts/diagnostics for reuse by various work groups.
  • Ensure all NIF radioactive waste leaving the site complies with LLNL WCP-8 requirements, track LLW (Low‑Level Waste) production and identify waste minimization opportunities, and initiate and develop new LLW streams as needed.
  • Participate in NIF review committees to evaluate new experiments and/or NIF hardware to ensure appropriate disposition pathways are identified prior to creation of new radiological or mixed waste materials.
  • Maintain meticulous records of the amounts of radioactive material managed out of the Facility in the various waste streams.
  • Act as NIF’s point of contact for LLNL RHWM external waste audits (including EPA), demonstrating radioactive waste generation, packaging, and container closeout, supporting records review and oral examinations, and leading facility tours on waste generation and management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Serve as Deputy Radiation Safety Officer, with responsibility for developing future Rad Ops capabilities. Utilize judgment to provide evaluation of complex operational needs and Radiation Control Technicians (RCT) task loading, providing in-depth, analytical direction to Radiation Control Field Supervisors and RCTs.
