Job DescriptionWe have an opening for a Metal Casting Scientist/Engineer to perform a full range of moderate to complex tasks in the area of metal casting research. You will be an integral member of an interdisciplinary team responsible for conducting and supporting research in actinide sciences, material science, process development, and validation of complex simulations.
This position is in the Advanced Materials Process Science group of the Materials Science Division. The selected candidate will support the Casting and Shaping Technologies group within Superblock.
This position will be filled at either the SES.
1 or SES.
2 level, depending on qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
- Support the research, development and documentation of metal casting process procedures.
- Investigate and document causes of casting defects such as porosity, shrinkage, inclusions, and misruns, and recommend corrective actions.
- Serve as a technical contact on metal casting and foundry technologies.
- Convey capabilities to programmatic stakeholders and external sponsors.
- Conduct experiments in an inert atmosphere glovebox.
- Handle hazardous, flammable, and radiological materials.
- Document experimental design and observations in written and electronic notebooks.
- Develop and present written analyses and verbal briefings that capture and communicate research results as well as periodic progress reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
2 Level
- Perform simulations of casting processes using Pro Cast, Flow-3D, ANSYS or similar simulation packages.
- Perform laboratory work with minimal supervision.
- Present results at external conferences, seminars and/or technical meetings.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- BS in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Knowledge of metal casting technologies.
- Ability to lift 20 lbs regularly.
- Ability to perform work in a respirator and coveralls.
- Ability to work independently, as well as a member of a team.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to deliver presentations and prepare written reports, explain technical information, and provide advice to management.
- The interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff within a collaborative research environment.
2 level
- Master’s (MS) degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Metallurgy or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Hands on experience with casting metals in a VIM (Vacuum Induction Melting) furnace.
- Knowledge of software packages for the simulation of metal casting.
$121,830 - $154,500 Annually for the SES.
1 level
$146,340 - $185,544 Annually for the SES.
2 level
This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.
