Department Overview

GILLIG Engineering is responsible for the development, customization, and configuration of GILLIG’s clean technology heavy-duty transit buses. Validation Engineering focuses on testing, simulation, and evaluation of systems and vehicle platforms to ensure design requirements and performance meet the demands of heavy-duty transit.

About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Vehicle Systems Bench Engineer to join the Validation group. This role conducts complex system and vehicle-level design verification (DV) and production validation (PV) tests to confirm requirements within program timelines. The role also supports traceability of DFMEA to DVP&R to final reports and may involve creating tools and processes.

This on-site role is based at the Livermore, CA Technology Center and reports to the Director of Validation, with possible guidance from senior engineers.

Responsibilities
  • Own Hardware in the Loop (HIL) development activities, including bench commissioning, software delivery coordination, test planning, and automation development and execution.
  • Scope facility and equipment needs for bench build and system integration tests with stakeholders.
  • Lead test automation strategy; develop scripts (MATLAB, Python, CANoe, Veri Stand, etc.) to perform automated testing.
  • Optimize systems, tools, processes, and infrastructure to prioritize benches, document test cases/procedures, and align with software release schedules.
  • Collaborate with integration engineers to design/build test benches for high and low voltage systems.
  • Meet diagnostic coverage requirements and run testing with native hardware to exercise software; document non-conformances and report results.
  • Troubleshoot systems/ECUs using lab equipment (power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters) and tools (Vector CANoe, CANalyzer, CANape, NI tools).
  • Coordinate with test engineers to perform system-level testing and resolve issues with Engineering; document non-conformances using the TIR process.
  • Report programmatic metrics, risk assessments, and corrective actions related to testing and software development to Leadership.

  • Technically Minded: Apply industry practices and standards (NFPA, NEC, APTA, etc.) and provide guidance to staff. Demonstrate deep professional knowledge to develop and resolve complex models and procedures.

  • Communication: Collaborate across the organization; adapt style to different audiences.
  • Complexity: Manage DV/PV plans within the team and solve problems of diverse, complex scope.
  • Quality & Standards: Ensure verification/validation documentation is comprehensive and traceable to requirements and objectives; release test plans and reports with high attention to detail.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the engineering industry
  • Experience with automotive/heavy-duty system benches and software development
  • Expertise with open/closed-loop control systems for sensors, actuators, ECUs; proficiency in CAN-Bus, LIN, Ethernet
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, Simulink, Stateflow
  • Programming knowledge and vehicle serial data protocols (SAE J1939, J3117; IEEE 802.3)
  • Experience integrating control systems with low/high voltage automotive environments
  • Hands-on troubleshooting, prototyping, testing, and validation
  • Experience with suppliers and engineering/validation activities
  • Knowledge of industry standards (FMVSS, NHTSA, DOT, NFPA, SAE, NEC) and ADA/APTA guidance
WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Ability to lift 25 lbs
  • Prolonged computer work; sit/stand/walk; occasional kneeling or squatting
  • Ability to meet physical requirements with/without accommodation
  • Navigate manufacturing environments; comfortable around heavy machinery and tools
  • Personal Protective Equipment required (safety glasses, bump caps, hearing protection, etc.)
  • Limited travel may be required
