Job Description
We have an opening for Mechanical Technologist / Sr. Mechanical Technologist. You will support new and ongoing experiments in the High Explosives Applications Facility (HEAF) within the Defense Technologies Engineering Division (DTED)/Weapon Technologies and Engineering (WTE) Program, supporting the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Principal Directorate. This is a full‑time on‑site position.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and experience. The following responsibilities apply, with additional duties at the 533.3 level.
- Provide general technical support to engineering, scientific, and technical staff to plan and conduct experiments at LLNL and off‑site locations, supporting physics experiments, mechanical engineering evaluation, and ensuring operational readiness of four facilities.
- Design, fabricate, assemble, and disassemble moderately complex mechanical components and systems under the work control process.
- Operate mechanical diagnostic equipment, maintain area controls, assist with calibration and alignment, test prior to execution, and recover data after execution.
- Apply intermediate knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to solve mechanical problems.
- Support operations, maintenance, design, fabrication, and assembly while keeping systems documentation and records.
- Perform maintenance, testing, upgrades to equipment control, and interlock system checks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Provide advanced technical assembly/disassembly support for complex assemblies.
- Design and fabricate complex components and systems, selecting materials and methods.
- Assist in developing test parameters, troubleshooting, and testing materials, components, or systems, providing input on solutions.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q‑level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).
- Associate degree in Engineering Technology, formal apprenticeship, or equivalent education and experience.
- Experience solving moderately complex technical problems.
- Experience with mechanical diagnostic equipment and data recovery.
- Experience in mechanical fabrication and assembly.
- Effective written and verbal communication and presentation skills; teamwork ability.
- Ability to complete required certifications.
- Physical: lift 50 lb safely; wear respirator and other protective equipment; perform moderate work effort.
- Experience with high‑precision component assemblies and tight tolerances.
- High‑level technical skills and engineering knowledge to solve complex problems.
- Ability to read complex assembly procedures, engineering notes, and drawings.
- Experience fulfilling Work Control process and procedure requirements.
- Experience working with radioactive/fissile materials.
- Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.

Pay Range$43.55 - $63.97 Hourly; $43.55 - $53.36 Hourly for 533.2; $52.23 - $63.97 Hourly for 533.3.
Lowest to highest salary in good faith. Pay based on competencies, education, experience, skills, seniority, location, performance, and organizational needs.
Security ClearanceThis position requires a DOE Q‑level clearance. If selected, a federal background investigation will be initiated to determine eligibility for access to classified information. All L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q‑level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
