Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The Telemetry team at the National Laboratories in Livermore, CA is seeking an R&D Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team. We are responsible for the design, development, testing, and qualification of multiple telemetry products across the ND portfolio. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will contribute to the mechanical design, conduct full product environmental testing, verify requirements in support of qualification and product delivery, develop fixtures, document hardware, assemble parts, and manage fabrication processes.

Must collaborate with a multi‑faceted engineering team.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand and document system needs and requirements for Telemetry hardware.
  • Work with a cross‑functional team to establish long‑term visions and short‑term priorities for the mechanical engineering team.
  • Utilize critical thinking to troubleshoot both mechanical and electromechanical issues, providing solutions within programmatic constraints.
  • Engage in hands‑on work with the Telemetry product through fabrication and testing activities.
  • Use CREO and PDMLink to design and model the Telemetry product.
  • Perform and analyze finite element analysis (FEA) simulations for stress, strain, modal and thermal environments.
  • Work with vendors and Sandia buyers to procure development parts.
  • Work with MCAD and the product definition team to create and authorize product drawings.
  • The position requires an ability to travel up to 25% to support the mission.
Education and Licensure
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or another relevant engineering field. (required)
Skills, Experience and Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. (required)
  • Mechanical testing (shock, vibration, temperature, pressure, humidity) and data analysis.
  • Strong design skills in CAD.
  • GD&T knowledge.
  • Experience designing for multiple manufacturing processes including machined aluminum, sheet metal and 3D printing (FDM).
  • Due to federal contract security requirements, candidates must be able to successfully pass a federal background investigation to secure and maintain DOE Q security clearance. (required)
  • Due to federal contract security requirements, this position requires U.S. citizenship. (required)
  • Health & safety training, medical monitoring, and client‑driven drug and background testing. (required)

Please note that marijuana remains a Schedule III controlled substance under Federal Law. Federal contractors must follow Federal drug‑free workplace rules, which prohibit marijuana use, even if medical or recreational use is permitted under state law.

Preferred Qualifications & Location Details
  • Graduate level degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience with in the NNSA complex.
  • GD&T ANSI Y14.5 experience.
  • Experience with nuclear weapons and/or test assembly design principles.
  • Demonstrated experience with designing, testing, or fabricating aerospace hardware.
  • Demonstrated experience with testing in vibration, shock, thermal, vacuum, and centrifuge.
  • CREO skills.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Livermore, CA – Onsite Position.
  • Contract duration of 2‑3 years.

The typical base salary range for this position is $115,000/year to $130,000/year (CA).
