North Wind Services (NWS) is a high performing, low risk company supporting national security missions in science, technology, and engineering. NWS provides environmental investigation and restoration, construction, demolition, radioactive and hazardous waste management, public communication/involvement, information management, health and safety, industrial hygiene, and emergency response/HAZMAT services. This position supports the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science (NIF&PS) Directorate at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in Livermore, CA.
As an NWS employee working at LLNL, you will complete day-to-day tasks with direction from LLNL technical personnel. Pay, benefits, and employment management are provided by NWS.
The NIF&PS Directorate has multiple openings for qualified Mechanical Design Engineers. The role requires a passion for mechanical engineering, the ability to think creatively, and the capability to forecast changes to sustain high achievement and excellence. NIF is a state-of-the-art facility that requires fast-paced, highly skilled, and trained employees. The Mechanical Design Engineer will develop, individually or with teams, designs for complex systems and support the installation and commissioning of hardware, with interactions with vendors and system integration in large projects.
Flexibility to work overtime may be required to accomplish goals, and candidates may need to complete on-site training modules. A presentation demonstrating essential duties, skills, knowledge, and abilities is required at the time of the interview.
Essential Duties- Perform development, concept, and completion of detailed designs of hardware for laser, optics, mechanical and diagnostic applications.
- Apply advanced knowledge of 3D CAD modeling of design concepts using PTC Creo Parametric.
- Develop assembly and detailed fabrication specification drawings and documentation for all designs.
- Perform interference and tolerance stack-up analyses to validate form, fit, function and cost optimization of each design.
- Apply basic stress/strain analyses to substantiate sizing and material decisions of all components.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- AS degree, or equivalent, with applicable experience in the mechanical engineering field.
- Working knowledge of developing design concepts with a broad background in its various sub-disciplines - mechanical, optical, and electrical.
- Experience with conception, design, fabrication and materials, prototyping projects from start to finish.
- Ability to develop a project from start to finish with examples from past jobs.
- Demonstrated ability to produce and analyze tolerance stack-ups.
- Extensive working knowledge of parametric solid modeling.
- Experience creating fabrication drawings that utilize Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
- Experience creating assembly drawings that show assembly and design intent.
- Experience working as a member of a project team with engineers, scientists, designers, technicians, and coordinators.
- Ability to present concepts clearly in both verbal and written form to peers and managers for small and large groups.
- Ability to independently solve problems and achieve results on schedule.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
- Must be able to meet pre-employment requirements including a physical, drug screen and background investigation under DOE clearance requirements.
- Applied experience with Creo Parametric / Creo Simulate.
- Applied experience with PTC Windchill PDM system (Eng. Change Requests and Eng. Change Notices).
- Experience reviewing and verifying the accuracy of work performed by peers and other engineering disciplines.
- Ability to perform structural and/or thermal analyses to define materials, calculations for stress and strain, and material requirements.
- Pre-Placement Medical Exam may be required.
- Pre-employment drug test after offer.
- Anticipated Government Clearance Level: Q (U.S. citizenship required for L or Q clearance).
