Senior Computer Scientist – Graph Science and Irregular Computing Group, Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC), Computing Directorate, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)
Job SummaryDesign, develop, and deploy next‑generation algorithms and software for mission‑relevant cybersecurity and computing role supports the Global Security Directorate’s near‑real‑time analysis of massive‑scale data and drives new data‑science capabilities for the U.S. national security enterprise. Work in a multidisciplinary environment of computational scientists, applied mathematicians, and software engineers to advance high‑performance computing (HPC) capabilities, emphasizing sparse linear algebra, graph algorithms, and large‑scale AI/ML optimization on modern heterogeneous architectures.
The position is on‑site and may require travel for stakeholder engagement.
- Lead and contribute to research and development in scalable data science, AI/ML, and applied mathematics that support U.S. security missions.
- Develop and direct technical tasks for complex projects, set research vision, and influence technical direction across the Laboratory and partners.
- Create innovative solutions for abstract, complex graph and/or sparse linear algebra problems; develop usable algorithms and software modules.
- Generate new ideas, modify approaches, and redefine requirements that significantly impact Laboratory programs.
- Design and implement AI/ML optimization and deployment at scale.
- Build prototype HPC software in C++ using MPI and related parallel programming models, prioritizing performance portability, correctness, and maintainability.
- Engage sponsors and stakeholders to develop new program growth opportunities, contribute to research proposals, and align with mission objectives.
- Mentor and collaborate with team members, attracting and retaining projects, programs, and funding.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Active DOE Q‑level clearance or TOP SECRET clearance from another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Computational Science, or equivalent education and experience.
- Expert project leadership experience in applied math, AI/ML, or computer science research; ability to manage concurrent technical tasks with competing priorities.
- High‑level experience creating technical direction and vision, writing research proposals, and securing sponsor funding.
- Demonstrated expertise designing HPC software and algorithms at scale, particularly with C++ and MPI.
- Strong peer‑reviewed publication record in sparse linear algebra and/or graph algorithms for large‑scale computation.
- Proven experience with large‑scale computation (e.g., distributed optimization, AI/ML training at scale, performance/efficiency tuning, scalable data/compute pipelines).
- Experience with GPU programming and/or performance‑portable approaches (CUDA, HIP, OpenMP offload, Kokkos, RAJA).
- Familiarity with relevant libraries and ecosystems (BLAS/LAPACK, sparse BLAS, graph frameworks, distributed runtimes).
- Track record of leading technical efforts, mentoring, and delivering robust software to users.
- Experience with defense or non‑proliferation applications.

The position requires onsite presence and is a Flexible Term appointment (maximum six years). If the final candidate is a Career Indefinite employee, indefinite status may be maintained should funding allow.
Security‑related responsibilities include meeting post‑offer pre‑employment drug testing and complying with Department of Energy restrictions on mobile devices in limited areas.
