A Brief Overview The Nursing Professional Practice Consultant serves as an expert practitioner and change agent to advance high-quality, evidence-based nursing care across the organization. In addition to providing professional practice consultation, this role leads the design, development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of education programs for nursing and interprofessional staff. The role integrates clinical expertise with educational leadership to support standardization of care, competency assurance, professional development, and continuous improvement of patient outcomes.
Locations Stanford Health Care Tri-Valley What you will do1. Professional Practice Consultation and Quality Improvement
1. Provide expert nursing consultation to optimize patient outcomes, safety, and adherence to best practices and regulatory standards.
2. Lead or participate in the development and revision of clinical practice guidelines, standards of care, policies, and care pathways in collaboration with nursing leadership and interprofessional teams.
3. Facilitate evidence-based practice (EBP) initiatives, including needs assessments, gap analyses, literature reviews, implementation planning, and outcome measurement.
4. Lead or participate in performance improvement activities using quality improvement methods and data-driven approaches.
5. Support professional practice governance through participation in committees and work groups; translate policy into practice with practical tools and standard work.
2. Education Program Development and Management
1. Ensure alignment of education programs and competency assurance initiatives across nursing and interprofessional teams with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and hospital safety standards.
2. Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive education programs, including onboarding/orientation, residency/new-graduate programs, specialty tracks, competency-based curricula, and ongoing clinical education.
3. Manage learning management system (LMS) activities: course creation, enrollment, tracking, certifications, and reporting; ensure compliance with continuing education (CE) requirements and documentation.
3. Leadership, Collaboration, and Change Management
1. Build strong working relationships with nursing leadership, medical staff, quality, safety, informatics, education, and operative services to enable practice changes.
2. Serve as a consultant, educator, and mentor to promote professional practice, professional development and lifelong learning.
3. Advocate for and facilitate practice changes using structured change management approaches; address barriers to adoption and sustain improvements.
4. Support interprofessional education initiatives to improve teamwork, communication, and patient-centered care.
Education Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university Required Master's Degree in nursing
Preferred Experience Qualifications5+ years to 7 years of experience as a registered nurse Required3+ years to 5 years in education, practice development, or quality improvement Preferred Required Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to influence and collaborate across disciplines and levels of leadership.
Project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, and resources; demonstrated change management capabilities.
Knowledge of evidence-based practice, patient safety, quality improvement methods (e.g., PDSA cycles), and regulatory standards (e.g., Joint Commission, State Board of Nursing, CMS).Able to manage time and prioritize effectively; organized and self-driven
Ability to read, write and understand English language
