We invite PhD graduates from a variety of STEM fields (physics, engineering, computational sciences, planetary sciences, chemistry, materials science) to apply. These fellowships are designed for individuals who have completed their PhD and wish to further develop their skills, knowledge, and abilities. Fellowship positions are in the Design Physics Division within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.
Fellowship OverviewFoster and Brown Fellows will undertake independent and collaborative research projects aligned with LLNL’s national security mission. Fellows participate in experimental, computational, and/or theoretical work and have access to LLNL’s extensive computing facilities, laboratories, and field equipment.
Responsibilities- Conduct research in a topical area using theory, experiment, and/or simulation tools.
- Pursue independent research interests and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists both internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Organize, analyze, and present research results in LLNL seminars and at major scientific conferences.
- Develop new tools, algorithms, and/or design new experiments to further our scientific understanding.
- Publish research results in peer‑reviewed journals and present at external conferences, seminars, and technical meetings.
- Perform other tasks as assigned.
- PhD degree in a STEM discipline or related field.
- Experience in high-quality research in a relevant field, demonstrating both detailed understanding and a broad perspective.
- Creativity and significant proven accomplishments in experimental science, numerical simulations, modeling, and/or theoretical techniques.
- Experience developing innovative solutions to scientific and technical problems.
- Track record of independent research and publication in peer‑reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively.
- Ability to secure and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance (requires U.S. citizenship).
$151,956 Annually
Position InformationPostdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years, open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire.
