Agency Overview
Zone 7 Water Agency is located in the Tri-Valley region of the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. It provides water on a wholesale basis to the cities of Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin and the Dougherty Valley area of San Ramon, and flood‑protection services to all of eastern Alameda County. Zone 7 employs approximately 116 full‑time employees and operates on an annual budget of $80.3 million.
The Agency’s administrative offices are located in Livermore, CA.
Under general supervision, the Plant Mechanic performs skilled mechanical installation, maintenance and repair work on water treatment plant and field distribution system equipment and facilities. The role independently performs maintenance and repair on pumps, motors, valves, compressors, piping systems and related water treatment and distribution equipment. The mechanic receives direction from the Lead Plant Mechanic and reports to the Facilities Maintenance and Construction Supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications- Equivalent of two years of full‑time experience in skilled mechanical maintenance and repair work in a water or wastewater treatment or industrial setting.
- Completion of an apprenticeship in a related field (e.g., machinist, electrician or electronics technician) may substitute up to one year of required experience.
- Possession of a valid California Driver’s license.
Knowledge of:
- Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in water treatment plant and field distribution system maintenance and repair work, including plumbing, electrical and related building trades work.
- Shop math.
- Safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work.
- Metal fabrication, including welding, brazing and soldering.
- Principles of lead supervision.
Ability to:
- Install, diagnose, repair and maintain a wide variety of mechanical equipment used in water treatment and distribution work.
- Plan and complete work assignments independently.
- Operate and maintain a wide variety of hand, power and shop tools and equipment used in the work.
- Observe safe work methods and safety precautions related to the work.
- Read and interpret plans, specifications, manuals and schematics.
- Estimate materials, tools and equipment required to perform assignments efficiently.
- Follow written and oral instructions.
- Direct the work of others as assigned.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:
- Willingness to work in exposure to potentially hazardous materials, confined spaces and outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Possess strength sufficient to perform work assignments.
- Willingness to respond to emergencies in off‑hours as required.
