Overview

Coastal Ocean Modelling Scientist – National Oceanography Centre

We seek a talented and enthusiastic ocean scientist model developer to join the Marine Systems Modelling group at NOC in Liverpool. The successful candidate will work on keeping our ocean modelling capability at the leading edge, through developing, testing and using the NEMO ocean model. The focus will be on all aspects of ocean physics pertinent to the coastal ocean in both regional and global configurations at high resolution.

These model developments will be applied in multi-decadal simulations to investigate the response of the coastal ocean to climatic and direct anthropogenic change. She/he will be expected to develop their own scientific research direction in this context, publish in appropriate high-impact journals and seek grant income. She/he will be expected to collaborate widely in the UK and internationally, particularly with the UK Met Office and the international NEMO consortium.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, test and apply coastal ocean modelling capabilities using the NEMO ocean model.
  • Address all aspects of ocean physics relevant to coastal regions in regional and global configurations at high resolution.
  • Carry out multi-decadal simulations to study responses of the coastal ocean to climate change and direct anthropogenic effects.
  • Develop an independent research direction within this context and publish in high-impact journals.
  • Seek grant income and collaborate widely in the UK and internationally (notably with the UK Met Office and the NEMO consortium).
Qualifications and Experience
  • Experience in dynamical environmental modelling, preferably in oceanography.
  • Expert programmer, ideally in FORTRAN, with high performance computing experience.
  • Understanding of ocean, and particularly shelf sea physics, is highly desirable.
  • Strong 1st degree in a numerate science, engineering or mathematics discipline and PhD or equivalent research experience in physical oceanography or other numerate environmental science.
Employment Details
  • Full-time, permanent position offered on NERC terms and conditions; open to internal and external candidates.
  • Band 6 with starting salary £28,200 to £30,600 per annum. For candidates with substantial track record, Band 5 level with starting salary £35,222 to £38,254 may be considered.
  • Competitive remuneration package, including a RCUK pension scheme, 30 days annual leave plus 14 public/local days off, and a flexi-time system. Opportunities for training and development.
