DescriptionThe Special Education Adjunct Instructor provides high-quality instruction in undergraduate and/or graduate special education courses on a part-time, term-by-term basis. The instructor prepares teacher candidates to provide evidence-based instruction and services for students with disabilities in inclusive and specialized educational settings. Responsibilities include delivering course content, engaging students in meaningful learning experiences, assessing student performance, and maintaining high academic standards consistent with departmental and institutional expectations.
- Teach assigned undergraduate and/or graduate special education courses in accordance with approved curriculum and program learning outcomes.
- Prepare teacher candidates to implement evidence-based instructional practices and interventions for students with disabilities across educational settings.
- Integrate current research, federal and state special education laws, and best practices into course instruction.
- Develop and/or update course materials, including syllabi, assignments, assessments, and instructional resources.
- Deliver instruction through assigned modalities, including face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats.
- Evaluate student performance and provide timely, constructive feedback.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, grades, and other required documentation.
- Communicate effectively with students regarding course expectations, academic progress, and professional responsibilities.
- Maintain scheduled office hours or be available to students as appropriate for the course format.
- Adhere to institutional policies, accreditation standards, academic expectations, and departmental deadlines.
- Participate in departmental meetings, professional development, and faculty training as requested and appropriate for adjunct faculty.
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned master's degree in special education or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
- Terminal degree in Special Education or a closely related field preferred.
- Minimum of five years of successful teaching experience in P–12 special education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices, specially designed instruction, behavior supports, inclusive practices, and individualized education program (IEP) development and implementation.
- Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations, including the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and instructional skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Earned terminal degree in Special Education or a closely related field.
- Experience teaching special education courses in higher education.
- Experience supervising teacher candidates during clinical or field experiences.
- Experience teaching online using learning management systems such as Blackboard or Canvas.
- Current or recent experience in inclusive educational settings and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning in special education research and evidence-based practices.
- Adjunct appointments are part-time and contingent upon enrollment, funding, and departmental needs.
- Compensation is determined on a per-course basis.
- Adjunct faculty are not eligible for benefits unless otherwise specified by institutional policy.
