Definition
Under general supervision, the Resident Firefighter performs firefighting, fire prevention, fuel-reduction, and emergency-response duties as a member of a fire suppression crew. Incumbents assist with wildfire and all-risk emergency operations, station and equipment maintenance, and community fire prevention activities while residing at a City-designated fire facility in accordance with program guidelines.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsThe Resident Firefighter classification is an entry-level fire service position designed to support departmental operations while providing training and experience in fire suppression and prevention. Unlike seasonal or extra-help classifications, Resident Firefighters are assigned to a designated fire station or facility and may be required to reside on-site as part of the program. Duties emphasize wildland fire suppression, fuel mitigation, and operational readiness under the direct supervision of Fire Officers.

Received: Direct supervision from a Fire Crew Leader, Fire Lieutenant, Fire Captain, or assigned Battalion Chief.
Exercised: No formal supervisory responsibility.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Assist in firefighting operations for wildland, urban interface, and other emergency incidents.
- Respond to alarms as a member of a fire suppression crew and enter active fire environments as directed.
- Participate in fuel reduction and fire prevention activities, including cutting, piling, chipping, burning, and maintaining fuel breaks, roads, and trails.
- Perform Fireline construction activities such as digging, raking, pruning, and chainsaw operations.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and firefighting equipment.
- Assist in operating and maintaining fire apparatus and related equipment.
- Perform heavy manual labor related to maintenance, construction, clean-up, and emergency operations.
- Participate in regular training, drills, and fire prevention activities.
- Assist with fire station, building, grounds, and equipment maintenance.
- Inspect, clean, and perform minor repairs on tools and equipment.
- Perform general housekeeping duties within fire facilities.
- Maintain physical fitness necessary to perform firefighting duties.
- Other duties may be assigned that are consistent with this classification.
Knowledge of:
- Basic maintenance principles and safe work practices.
- Use of hand tools, power tools, and firefighting equipment.
- Basic mathematical concepts.
Ability to:
- Learn firefighting and emergency response techniques through training and observation.
- Perform strenuous physical labor in hazardous and outdoor environments.
- Follow oral and written instructions quickly, particularly during emergency situations.
- Operate tools and equipment safely and effectively.
- Communicate and work effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Maintain good physical conditioning and fitness.
- Education:
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade. - Experience:
Experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position. - Age Requirement:
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Required at time of appointment and to be maintained throughout employment:
- Valid California Class C driver’s license.
- S-130 Firefighter Training certification.
- S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior certification.
- S-212 Wildland Fire Chainsaws certification.
- AHA or ARC Professional Rescuer CPR and First Aid certification.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work, including hiking over uneven terrain, lifting, carrying heavy equipment, and working in extreme weather, heat, smoke, and hazardous conditions.
- May be required to reside at a designated City fire facility and comply with resident program requirements.
- Work schedule may include nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-outs.
- Successful completion of a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
- Background investigation and medical evaluation may be required.
