What You’ll Do:
The Data Center Design team is the technical engineering team responsible for the architectural and infrastructure design standards across Core Weave's global portfolio, ensuring facilities are highly scalable, efficient, and optimized to support next-generation, high-density compute workloads. The team drives the entire design lifecycle from early-stage site feasibility through final technology fit-out, establishing the foundation for seamless construction and long-term operational success.
Through continuous technical innovation and standardization, they enable Core Weave to rapidly and reliably scale its physical footprint to meet global infrastructure demands.
The Medium Voltage Substation/Distribution Design Engineer leads the electrical design and engineering of medium voltage substations (15kV - 230kV) across Core Weave's data center campus portfolio. On a day-to-day basis, you will own power infrastructure projects from early concept through construction support, executing substation layouts, equipment selection, single-line diagrams, and protection/control schemes. You will act as a hands‑on technical expert, developing core design concepts, reviewing power systems analysis studies (short‑circuit, load flow, arc flash), and directing external engineering consultants to produce high‑quality deliverables.
Additionally, you will integrate advanced on-site generation systems—including BESS, turbines, and automatic transfer schemes—while mentoring junior engineers to ensure all distribution solutions are safe, code‑compliant, and optimized for high‑density power demands. This role requires up to 30% travel.
In this role, you will:
- Manage power infrastructure projects from early concept through construction support, executing substation layouts, equipment selection, single-line diagrams, and protection/control schemes.
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve medium voltage engineering standards, design guidelines, and best practices to enable rapid infrastructure scaling.
- Review and provide technical oversight of design drawings, specifications, calculations, and power systems analysis studies (short‑circuit, load flow, arc flash) from external consultants.
- Partner with third‑party engineering firms, utility providers, and equipment manufacturers to ensure strict compliance with Basis of Design (BoD) requirements.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and engineering excellence.
- Support project planning activities, including early‑stage site feasibility, capacity planning, budgeting, and risk management.
- Education:
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution, or equivalent practical experience. - Experience:
7+ years of experience specifically focused on medium voltage substation and distribution design. - Technical Deliverables:
Direct experience producing substation design deliverables, including single-line diagrams (SLDs), three-line diagrams, protection schematics, equipment layouts, grounding plans, and cable schedules. - Equipment & Systems:
Experience specifying medium voltage equipment (transformers, switch gear, switchboards, capacitor banks) and designing protection and control systems, including relay coordination and settings. - Generation Integration:
Experience designing and integrating on-site generation systems, including generators, turbines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), automatic transfer schemes, paralleling switch gear, and inverter/converter interfacing. - Software Proficiency:
Hands‑on proficiency with power systems analysis software (ETAP, SKM, PSCAD, or equivalent) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, Micro Station, or equivalent). - Thorough working knowledge of IEEE standards (C2, 80, 242, 399, 519, 1584) and NEC/NFPA requirements (including NFPA 70E, NESC, ANSI, and IEC guidelines).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or active pursuit of licensure.
- Experience managing utility interconnection requirements and utility coordination.
- Familiarity with SCADA, RTUs, substation automation systems, and communication protocols (such as IEC…
