Schedule: 4 days per week, 10 hour shifts (40 Hours/Week)

Position Summary

Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center is seeking a highly motivated Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) to join our growing Aortic Surgery Program. This position will primarily support the outpatient management of patients with aortic disease, including pre‑operative evaluation, post‑operative follow‑up, surveillance, and longitudinal care coordination. The APP will work closely with cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists, vascular specialists, and multidisciplinary team members throughout RWJBarnabas Health.

The role will be based primarily at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center, with occasional travel to Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center as needed.

In addition to outpatient responsibilities, the APP may participate in inpatient rounding and consultation activities to support continuity of care for aortic surgery patients.

Key Responsibilities

Outpatient

  • Perform history and physicals, comprehensive assessments and manage patients with aortic aneurysms, chronic aortic dissections, connective tissue disorders, and related aortic pathology.
  • Perform preoperative assessments, postoperative follow‑up visits and develop a plan of care in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
  • Order and review diagnostic imaging studies, laboratory results, and clinical data in collaboration with physicians and surgeons.
  • Develop and implement treatment plans in accordance with established protocols and surgeon collaboration.
  • Provide patient and family education regarding disease processes, treatment options, surgical planning, postoperative recovery, and long‑term surveillance.
  • Coordinate referrals, consultations, diagnostic testing, and follow‑up care.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of clinical encounters, progress notes, orders, and care plans in the electronic medical record (EMR) as well as entry of procedural and time‑based evaluation/management codes.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary conferences.

Inpatient

  • Participate in inpatient rounding on cardiothoracic surgery and aortic surgery patients as needed.
  • Assist with hospital consultations and transitions of care.
  • Coordinate discharge planning and post‑discharge follow‑up.
  • Collaborate with nursing staff, case management, and ancillary services to ensure high‑quality patient outcomes.
  • Ensure timely and accurate documentation of clinical encounters, progress notes, orders, and care plans in the EMR as well as entry of procedural and time‑based evaluation/management codes.
  • Comply with hospital policies, procedures, and all regulatory requirements.

Program Development

  • Support growth and expansion of the regional Aortic Surgery Program.
  • Assist with quality improvement initiatives, patient tracking, and outcomes monitoring.
  • Contribute to development of clinical pathways and best practices.
  • Participate in community outreach, educational initiatives, and regional program development activities as appropriate.
Qualifications
  • Master’s or doctorate degree in Nursing (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) Studies from an accredited program.
  • Active license and board certification in the state of New Jersey NP (ACNP or FNP) or PA‑C.
  • Active DEA and CDS registration.
  • ACLS and BLS certification required.
  • Experience in Cardiology, Vascular Surgery or Cardiothoracic Surgery.
  • Experience with program development.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Effective communication with physicians, patients, families, and other team members, providing education and support throughout the care continuum.
