Position: Secondary Counselor (1.0) - Holmes Middle School

Secondary Counselor

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified and student-centered secondary school counselor who is passionate about helping all students reach their full potential. As a vital member of the school community, the counselor will support students' academic achievement, social-emotional well-being, college and career readiness, and personal growth. Working collaboratively with students, families, staff, and community partners, the counselor will help remove barriers to learning, foster meaningful relationships, and ensure that every student is equipped with the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Aligned with Livonia Public Schools' mission to Educate, Challenge, and Inspire, the counselor will play an essential role in advancing the district's vision for every learner. The counselor will help students explore future pathways, develop resilience and self-advocacy skills, and embody the qualities reflected in the Portrait of an LPS Graduate prepared for success in college, career, leadership, and life.

Major Functions and Responsibilities
  • Embrace the district's mission, vision, and collective commitments. Actions must reflect the district's philosophy that places the needs of children and their education first. The counselor values the opportunity to add to a strong school culture and climate.
  • Develop successful working relationships with school building staff, parents, students, and community members. Must possess highly effective written and verbal communication skills and function as an effective and collaborative team member.
  • Be a strong advocate for student success. The counselor assists teachers and staff in providing students with necessary and appropriate opportunities to meet high standards.
  • Commit to helping students explore college and career options suited to their goals and aspirations.
  • Actively participate in or lead teams established to review individual student performance and behavior.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement student intervention services in conjunction with classroom teacher(s).
  • Monitor student academic and behavioral progress in collaboration with school staff.
  • Contribute to positive home/school relationships by serving as a resource to teachers, students, and parents.
  • Provide support with the implementation and data analysis of universal screeners, student assessments, and progress monitoring data.
  • Assist and manage state testing and/or AP College Board regulations including testing logistics for students and staff.
  • Work collaboratively with Student Services support staff to provide appropriate interventions and data collection of student achievement and behavior.
  • Collect and analyze data based on student performance and plan interventions for struggling students.
  • Assist students in course selection.
  • Assist students in the preparation and processing of college, scholarship, and employment applications.
  • Provide career guidance and information for students seeking a future other than college.
  • Attend professional training sessions on identified topics to be used with students.
  • Execute other duties and assume other responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree in counseling or related field
  • A valid Michigan endorsement in counseling (NT) or school counseling
  • Evidence of successful experience working with middle and/or high-school-aged students is preferred
  • Successful experience working collaboratively with others
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Has demonstrated successful experience in providing research-based interventions in the affective domain for struggling students
  • Experience in the administration and interpretation of formal and informal assessments
  • A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students
  • Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships
