Orientation And Mobility Specialist
Livonia Public Schools is seeking a passionate and student centered Orientation And Mobility Specialist to join our team. The ideal candidate is a proactive, highly organized, and collaborative professional dedicated to supporting students who are blind, have low vision, or have functional visual limitations. This position requires a strong commitment to fostering independence, access, and meaningful participation for students ages 3-26 across educational and community environments through specialized instruction and consultation services.
The successful candidate will assess students' orientation and mobility needs, develop recommendations, and provide services tailored to each student's individual goals, travel environments, and visual prognosis as part of the IEP and IFSP processes. Responsibilities include conducting individualized evaluations, interpreting and communicating assessment findings, collaborating with families and multidisciplinary teams, and supporting the implementation of assistive technology and mobility devices to promote student success and independence.
Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $180 million, with a state funding of $10,000 per pupil.

Minimum qualifications for this position include a master's degree in Orientation and Mobility from an accredited university or college, a valid Orientation and Mobility Specialist Certificate (COMS) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP), knowledge of current state and federal mandates related to instruction of students with disabilities, ability to build and maintain positive, respectful relationships with students, families, and colleagues, strong interpersonal, collaboration, and teamwork skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, demonstrated ability to use student data to inform instruction, monitor progress and provide intervention/enrichment, and commitment to creating an inclusive environment that supports diverse learners.
