Science Teacher Position

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified science teacher who will be able to develop and sustain academic-focused instruction for students. The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement. The teacher will motivate each student to acquire knowledge in scientific facts and principles, skills in scientific methods of problem solving, and to discover and develop special talents of students in scientific fields.

The teacher will create an engaging, welcoming and positive classroom environment which stimulates achievement and growth.

Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,800 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $180 million, with a state funding of $10,000 per pupil.

Minimum qualifications for this position include a minimum of a bachelor's degree in the area of general science or biology or a major in the subject area; a valid Secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate - DX/DI/DQ preferred; a passionate commitment to improving learning for all students; demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships; skills in individualizing instruction; evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders;

superior verbal and written communication skills.

Major functions and responsibilities include creating a welcoming and positive classroom climate and culture; exhibiting a commitment to the District's Shared Vision and Collective Commitments; teaching skills, knowledge, and scientific attitudes through courses in general and integrated science to secondary students, utilizing curriculum based on MDE guidelines, state curriculum, and adopted by the Board of Education; developing a balanced science program involving demonstrations, lectures, discussions, and experiments;

organizing laboratory activities for optimal learning; demonstrating scientific concepts by use of scientific apparatus, experiments, and standard or teacher prepared charts, sketches, and other instructional aides; adapting science materials and methods to develop engaging, relevant, sequential lessons and assignments that guide and challenge students; providing individual and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual abilities, attitudes, and cultural backgrounds;

translating lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction; integrating school improvement goals into the classroom; maintaining student classroom records using current district technology; communicating with parents through conferences and other means to discuss curriculum, assessments, and student progress; instructing students in the proper use, care, and safe handling of chemicals, science equipment and plant and animal life;

providing for safe storage and proper use of materials, equipment, and tools; making minor adjustments and requests for repairs to equipment as required; encouraging students to think independently and to express original ideas;…
