High School Social Studies Teacher

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified high school social studies teacher who will be able to develop and sustain academic-focused instruction for his/her students. The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement. The social studies teacher has the responsibility for developing each student's appreciation of American ideals and cultural heritage. The teacher will develop the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts and motivate each student to understand and exercise his/her rights, privileges, and responsibilities of citizenship.

District Overview:
Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,700 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center and 1 vocational and transition center in the School District. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $185 million, with a state funding of $10,050 per pupil.

Minimum Qualifications:

The following is a list of minimum qualifications for this position, any one of which may be waived by the Superintendent in exercising the prerogative to determine appropriate qualifications. Minimum of a bachelor's degree in the area of social studies, government, or history. Valid Secondary Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsements in CQ, RX or CX preferred A major in the subject area is strongly preferred A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students.

Demonstrated positive interpersonal relationships. Skills in individualizing instruction Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders. Superior verbal and written communication skills.

Major Functions and Responsibilities:
Create a welcoming and positive classroom climate and culture. Exhibit a commitment to the District's Shared Vision and Collective Commitments. Teach content and skills in social studies, history, geography, American government, political science, or economics to secondary students, utilizing curriculum based on MDE guidelines, state curriculum, and adopted by the Board of Education. Develop a balanced social studies program involving factual background material, material on current events, discussion time, and other appropriate activities designed to encourage students to develop skills and attitudes, draw conclusions, achieve improved interpersonal relationships, and make value judgements.

Adapt social studies materials and methods to develop engaging, relevant sequential lessons and assignments that guide and challenge students. Provide individual and small group instruction to adapt curriculum to the needs…
