Job Summary

Geisinger offers community sites where Clinical Medical Assistants (CMAs) can apply their certification in an outpatient clinical setting while delivering top‑level care. Preferred to graduate from an accredited 1‑year certificate or 2‑year diploma Medical Assistant program. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required. Certification by one of the governing associations (NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA) is mandatory.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care and clinical support to physicians and other providers in the outpatient setting.
  • Prepare patients, collect and review pertinent information, perform technical duties, document using the electronic medical record (EMR), and maintain a safe environment.
  • Obtain and document patient visit data (reason for visit, weight, vital signs, screening, medication review) using the rooming tool in the EMR.
  • Set up examination and treatment rooms between cases and assist patients in preparation for provider visits.
  • Perform EKGs, wound dressing, and support provider during minor surgical procedures and ancillary examinations as clinically indicated.
    May not administer intravenous medications.
  • Administer medications according to policy and procedure after validation of knowledge and competency demonstration.
  • Complete patient tests and treatments per provider’s order, validating knowledge and competency.
  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens; complete associated paperwork accurately and efficiently. Perform phlebotomy and assist in laboratory functions under laboratory supervision.
  • Serve receptionist and clerical duties: match and file additional department reports, consult or other medical reports into patient records; document appropriate sections to create a complete medical record.
  • Use the EMR and scheduling system as designated; facilitate timely patient appointments.
  • Process referrals and pre‑authorizations; collect co‑payments.
  • Under provider/site lead direction, assist with orientation of new personnel.
  • Document ongoing patient communications, prioritize communications to the provider, and respond to patient inquiries to ensure efficient provider time and timely patient response.
  • Reinforce patient education as directed by provider.
  • Inventory medical/surgical supplies and pharmaceuticals (non‑controlled) to maintain adequate supply levels, verify expiration dates, document utilization, and optimize space.
  • Prepare and clean instruments; follow sterilization and disinfection protocols, including high‑level disinfection, cleaning of examination rooms between patients, and hand hygiene/infection prevention precautions.
  • Inspect and observe diagnostic equipment and instrumentation; identify need for preventive or corrective maintenance.
  • Participate actively in patient safety and quality improvement programs.
  • Work in a clinical environment; travel may be required.
  • Comply with all organization policies and procedures and satisfy all job‑specific obligations.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1year related work experience (preferred).
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) (required).
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA).
  • Certification by one of the governing associations (NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA).
  • Basic Life Support Certification within 6 months.
  • Communication, customer service, multitasking, and teamwork skills.
