Superintendent - Bess
The Superintendent - BESS provides direct field supervision for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System construction. The position leads foremen, craft personnel, and subcontractors in the safe, high-quality, and productive execution of assigned work; implements the Construction Manager and Project Manager's field plan; and maintains day-to-day accountability for crew deployment, equipment, documentation, schedule execution, and installation quality. The Superintendent must understand BESS civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, controls, and commissioning activities and be able to coordinate work from mobilization through energization, commissioning, and turnover.
WhatYou'll Do
Lead assigned crews and foremen and coordinate daily field construction activities across civil, structural, electrical, mechanical, and controls scopes.
- Organize crews and assign foremen and craft personnel to work based on project priorities, skill requirements, and the approved construction plan.
- Visit active work areas throughout the day to monitor safety, quality, production, workmanship, and compliance with the project schedule.
- Generate or support daily manpower, equipment, and tooling requirements; coordinate transfers and resource changes when field conditions warrant.
- Maintain superintendent reports, daily time sheets, job briefings, production records, equipment usage records, and major-event documentation.
- Lead or participate in weekly foreman meetings and required Owner/project meetings.
BESS Equipment Installation
- Direct field installation of battery energy storage enclosures/modules, inverters and Power Conversion Systems (PCS), DC cabling assemblies, Battery Management Systems (BMS), controls wiring, medium-voltage transformers, switch gear, thermal management systems, and fire suppression interfaces.
- Verify equipment pads, elevations, anchor bolt placement, access, and structural readiness before delivery and setting of major equipment.
- Coordinate receiving, laydown, delivery, rigging, setting, and protection of BESS containers, transformers, switch gear, and related equipment.
- Ensure installations follow approved drawings, specifications, OEM requirements, approved submittals, torque requirements, cable termination procedures, and installation checklists.
- Immediately elevate field conflicts, scope gaps, non-conforming work, or conditions requiring engineering clarification to the Construction Manager / Project Manager.
Subcontractor & Trade Coordination
- Direct and coordinate assigned subcontractor field activities and verify work is performed safely, productively, and within approved drawings and specifications.
- Coordinate sequencing between civil, structural, electrical, controls, OEM, and commissioning teams to reduce conflicts and maintain continuous workflow.
- Review subcontractor manpower and production information and promptly communicate performance concerns with supporting field documentation.
- Maintain effective communication with Owner representatives, inspectors, vendors, and other field stakeholders.
Field Safety
- Enforce all Company and project safety requirements and stop work when unsafe or imminent-danger conditions are observed.
- Conduct or participate in daily pre-task planning, job briefings, toolbox talks, safety observations, and required safety meetings.
- Enforce BESS-specific controls for electrical hazards, DC arc flash, Lockout/Tagout, thermal runaway/emergency response, hazardous materials, and energized work boundaries.
- Review incidents, near misses, and field safety concerns; support timely investigation, documentation, and corrective action.
- Maintain working knowledge of applicable OSHA requirements, NFPA 70E, NFPA 855, project safety plans, and site-specific procedures.
Field Quality Control
- Inspect work in place against project drawings, specifications, approved submittals, OEM requirements, and quality checklists.
- Ensure required inspections and tests are completed and documented before work is covered, accepted, or energized.
