Job Overview

Fairmont School District 89 is seeking a teacher for our Vocal and Instrumental Music program. The successful candidate will maintain appropriate interactions with all students and their parents, and work in close collaboration with fellow special area teachers, faculty/staff, and school administration. Demonstrate strong teaching skills, exceptional organization, effective classroom management, and a student-centered approach in all aspects of the position.

The ideal candidate will provide engaging vocal and instrumental music instruction while fostering creativity, musical appreciation, performance skills, and student achievement through standards-based instruction aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards. The teacher will cultivate a positive learning environment that encourages students to develop their musical talents, self-confidence, collaboration skills, and lifelong appreciation for music. Qualifications Required
  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Music endorsement(s) appropriate for assignment.
  • Knowledge of the Illinois Learning Standards for Fine Arts (Music).
  • Knowledge of child development and instructional practices for PreK–8 students.
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to integrate instructional technology into music education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred
  • Experience teaching both vocal and instrumental music in an elementary and middle school setting.
  • Experience directing student performances, concerts, assemblies, and school programs.
  • Experience with music technology, digital composition tools, and performance software.
  • Ability to accompany students on piano or keyboard.
  • Experience coordinating extracurricular music opportunities, including choir, band, talent shows, or music clubs.
  • Bilingual in Spanish, a plus.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Instructional Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver developmentally appropriate music instruction for students in K–8 with the possibility of PreK, one to two days per week, dependent on schedule.
  • Implement curriculum aligned to the Illinois Learning Standards for Fine Arts, Illinois State Board of Education requirements, and district goals. (Simply Hired)
  • Teach foundational music concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, notation, music theory, listening skills, performance techniques, and music appreciation.
  • Provide vocal and instrumental instruction that develops student musicianship and performance skills.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the academic, social, emotional, and cultural needs of diverse learners.
  • Utilize formative and summative assessments to monitor student growth and achievement.
  • Integrate technology and digital resources to enhance music instruction and student engagement.
  • Foster creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and artistic expression through music education.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress and communicate regularly with families regarding student achievement.
Performance and Program Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize, and direct school music performances, concerts, assemblies, and special programs.
  • Prepare students for public performances and district events.
  • Promote student participation in vocal and instrumental music opportunities.
  • Collaborate with staff to integrate music into school wide events and interdisciplinary learning experiences.
  • Support and encourage student participation in local, regional, and state music opportunities when appropriate, including Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) activities. (Illinois Music Education Association)
Professional Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with classroom teachers, intervention staff, special education personnel, and administration to support student success.
  • Attend faculty meetings, professional development activities, parent conferences, and district events as required.
