Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Job Title
Operates and maintains engine rooms and other mechanical equipment.
Duties Description
Operates the main and auxiliary engines, including related equipment such as diesel engines, compressors, hoists, pumps, swing and spud engines, generators, and plumbing. Supervises and performs routine maintenance such as oiling machinery, cleaning and painting engines and other equipment, lubricating steering gear, cleaning the engine room, and cleaning and replacing parts and filters. Keeps fuel tanks and air tanks filled. Checks, operates and adjusts oil and water gauges.
Opens and closes valves on main and auxiliary pumps. Repairs engines and other machinery for all vessel systems including, but not limited to steering, fuel propulsion, electrical, plumbing, and generators. Conducts periodic safety inspections of all mechanical equipment and machinery to ensure safe operating condition. Oversees and performs complete overhauls of engines and other machinery and equipment used on vessels.
Removes propellers, shafts, shaft beatings and rudders, and repairs or replaces them. Tears down and rebuilds engines, including regrinding or replacing valves and intake and exhaust seats, and removing pistons, piston rings, connecting rods, pumps, bearings and other mechanical parts for repair or replacement. Takes micrometer readings of shafts, beatings, cylinder liners, pistons and rings to determine wear, and decides whether to replace or repair them.
Cleans engine parts and rebuilds engines. Checks alignment of crank and generator shafts and realigns them. Removes, disassembles, checks and repairs air starting valves. Cleans, overhauls and rebuilds fuel pumps, water pumps, fuel injectors, and other equipment. Maintains inventory and oversees parts for equipment repair. Supervises subordinate staff. Trains staff to operate and maintain engines, machinery and related equipment. Assigns staff to maintenance, repair, operation, and inspection activities.
Directs the overhaul and repair of engines and equipment. Evaluates repairs and maintenance work for competency and quality. Ensures that the work of staff complies with safety procedures. Assists in the dry-docking and renovation of floating equipment when icing or weather conditions prevent work on the river. Works in Upland Disposal Sites and operates construction equipment such as excavators and bulldozers.
Minimum Qualifications
Four years of experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of diesel or internal combustion engines. Qualified candidates must also have possession of a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State at the time of appointment and continuously maintain it thereafter. Candidates and employees must also successfully complete drug testing requirements appropriate to the duties and responsibilities assigned.
Candidates who cannot successfully complete the drug testing requirements may not be offered employment and/or have their job offer rescinded. Employees who cannot successfully complete the drug testing requirements will be subject to administrative action up to and including termination. Please note that candidates will be placed in a random drug testing pool and be required to submit to random, periodic drug testing for the duration of their service in these positions.
