hiring bonus: $7,500
to qualify for this position you must currently be working as a public safety dispatcher (9-1-1) with a law enforcement agency and have at least one or more years of paid public safety dispatching experience. There will be no exceptions.
monetary milestones:
- $2,000 at completion of field training program (6‑8 weeks)
- $2,500 at completion of probationary period
- $3,000 at completion of one additional year of employment with satisfactory performance review
this position processes and handles prisoners, including but not limited to: the booking of arrested persons; performing searches; taking inventory of prisoner’s property; fingerprinting; monitoring the activities of prisoners in city detention facilities; providing daily care of prisoners including feeding and medicating; and maintaining and enforcing custodial facility regulations of the jail.
key responsibilities- receive 9‑1‑1 police, fire and medical emergency calls, answer non‑emergency calls for public safety and other city departments using independent judgment in often sensitive situations.
- perform a variety of non‑sworn office duties in support of law enforcement activities.
- determine the nature of call, priority and appropriate response or action, and dispatch police, fire or other emergency units as necessary in accordance with established guidelines.
- maintain contact with all units on assignment; maintain status and location of police field units; coordinate emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other public safety agencies.
- enter, update and retrieve information from computer networks relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration and other information.
- process and handle prisoners as described above.
- provide a variety of staff and administrative assistance related to the dispatch center; work with supervisory and management staff to resolve issues related to dispatch.
- perform special projects as assigned, including research, scheduling training opportunities and developing dispatch‑related policies and procedures.
- perform other duties related to the operation of the department and the city, including additional duties that enable the department and city to meet the diverse needs of its community.
- knowledge of public safety telecommunications equipment, computer‑aided dispatch systems and multi‑channel radio systems.
- experience operating communication equipment and related software; geographic features and boundaries.
- proficient in english usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; computerized data entry and retrieval systems used in dispatch communication and operations.
- familiarity with generally accepted office practices and procedures and standard office equipment including personal computers.
- first aid and cpr procedures.
- ability to learn city dispatch codes, policies and procedures; memorize codes, names, locations and other detailed information.
- work under pressure to obtain complete and accurate information from individuals who may be emotionally distraught, angry or difficult to understand.
- understand how to supervise prisoners, including physically escorting/directing or restraining and controlling combative prisoners in the jail by the use of restraint techniques and handcuffing procedures.
- operate computer‑aided dispatch system, display terminals, radio dispatching consoles and associated equipment; read and interpret street maps.
- type at a speed necessary for adequate job performance; compile and maintain complex and extensive records and files.
- work various shifts as assigned; work evening, night, weekend and holiday shifts; be callable during emergency situations.
- establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during the course of work.
- equivalent to the completion of high school.
- one year of public safety dispatching experience.
