Examination ProcessEvaluation of candidates is based entirely on a competitive review of the application materials and supplemental questionnaire. DefinitionPerforms and assists in a wide variety of routine, sometimes heavy, skilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, maintenance, installation and repair of water, wastewater, and storm drain utility infrastructure, and related duties throughout the city; operate power-driven equipment; and perform other related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVEDReceives supervision from higher level personnel and/or assigned lead workers. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Performs and assists in a wide variety of routine, sometimes heavy, skilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, water, storm drain, sewer service, and related duties throughout the city; operate power-driven equipment; and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Performs street maintenance work associated with asphalt, oil mix, sealants, and concrete, curbs and gutters, sidewalks, and utility trenches (including remove, replace and repair sidewalks, curbs and gutters); prepares sub-grade for concrete flatwork or roadways.
- Maintains drainage related systems including storm pumping stations, lines, manholes, and catch basins; clears plugged catch basin lines; installs and prepares underground storm lines.
- Repairs asphalt paving by shoveling and raking hot asphalt and operating light, medium and heavy duty equipment.
- Tools, equipment and vehicles used include: construction-related hand and power tools, cement mixers, asphalt berm machines, asphalt paving machines, boxes, plate compactors, breaker generators, breaker bars, circular saws, jig saws, table saws, rotary hammers, nail guns, drills, asphalt rollers and soil compaction equipment, asphalt and concrete saw cutting equipment, jackhammers and compressors, backhoes, skip loaders, and dump trucks.
- Install, remove and replace street signs and traffic control devices; paint, repaint curbs, street legends, pavement markings, replace pavement markers and conduct related activities; set up and remove temporary traffic control devices during emergencies.
- Assists in tree planting, removal and minor trimming; repairs sprinkler systems and related components; abates graffiti with painting and cleaning tools and equipment;
- Cleans and maintains a broad range of assigned areas;
- Performs other duties related to the operation of the department and the city, including additional duties that enable the department and City to meet the diverse needs of its community.
- Methods, materials, and equipment used in construction and maintenance; basic maintenance methods and equipment; methods, techniques, tools, and mechanical equipment associated with carpentry repairs, plumbing and construction;
- Purpose and uses of a variety of light and heavy equipment, vehicles, and power tools;
- Safe work practices including confined space entry and traffic control procedures
- Specific attributes of the City of Lodi street system or water/wastewater system.
- Assist in a wide variety of routine, sometimes heavy, skilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, water, wastewater, storm drain infrastructure, and other related duties throughout the city;
- Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned;
- Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner in routine situations; use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, and power tools and equipment required for the work in a safe and efficient manner;
