The San Joaquin County Public Works - Solid Waste Division is recruiting to fill four (4) full-time Equipment Service Worker III vacancies and to establish an eligible list which may be used to fill future vacancies.

Additional 4% increase effective July 2027

Pre-Employment Physical, Drug Screen and Background:
Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible candidate has passed the drug screen, physical and successfully completed the background process. The County pays for the initial drug screen and physical. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application.

about the position

This is the advanced-level class in the Equipment Service Worker series. Incumbents in this class are responsible for performing difficult non-mechanic equipment servicing duties, such as lubricating and providing general mechanical servicing for heavy road construction equipment, draw bridges, ferries and other equipment, at the work site, in the garage, or in the lube room.

Minimum qualifications

EITHER PATTERN I

Experience:

Two years as an Equipment Service Worker II in San Joaquin County service.

OR PATTERN II

Experience:

Four years servicing and lubricating automobiles or light trucks.

OR PATTERN III

Experience:

Two years servicing and lubricating medium and heavy road construction equipment.

AND FOR ALL PATTERNS

License:
Possession of a valid California driver’s license at the time of application; depending on assignment, may be required to obtain a valid California Class B driver’s license within six months of appointment, and to maintain such license while employed in the class.

Offers of employment are contingent on:
Successfully passing a pre-employment physical exam, pre-employment drug screen and pre- employment background investigation.

TYPICAL DUTIES
  • Lubricates heavy road construction equipment such as graders, bulldozers, rollers, compactors, tractors and backhoes, as well as other heavy mechanical equipment such as mowers, generators and compressors; checks oil levels; adds or replaces oil; monitors lubricant needs.
  • Services heavy road construction equipment; inspects and replaces air, fuel and oil filters; inspects and maintains batteries; checks for general mechanical problems; makes minor adjustments and repairs, or reports the need for repairs.
  • Starts, operates, and moves equipment as necessary.
  • Schedules equipment for service by consulting service records and manuals, or responding to requests of Foreman and Equipment Operators; maintains records of service performed; projects future service needs.
  • Regularly inspects, lubricates and makes minor adjustments on mechanical parts of drawbridges and cable fixed ferries; maintains equipment service and inspection records.
