Overview

The Utah State University Music Department invites applications for a full-time Assistant Professor in Music Therapy to contribute to the undergraduate music therapy program in the Department of Music within the Caine School of the Arts, College of Arts and Sciences. Candidate must possess an engaging teaching manner, strong interpersonal and clinical musicianship skills, with the ability to teach from different perspectives of theoretical orientations and approaches to music therapy.

Utah State University is NASM-accredited institution and hosts an AMTA-approved Academic and Clinical Music Therapy Training Program; it awards the Bachelor of Science in Music Therapy. The undergraduate music therapy program currently serves 80 students and supports one full-time faculty, one temporary instructor, one part-time clinical coordinator, and eight part-time supervisors/instructors.

Responsibilities
  • Teach undergraduate courses within the music therapy curriculum, which may include functional music skills courses, introductory courses, music therapy treatment methods, clinical practice with specific clinical communities, and psychology of music.
  • Maintain a high-quality profile of research or creative endeavors.
  • Collaborate with Program Director and Clinical Training Coordinator in determining student placements in field training experiences and respective field supervisors.
  • Assist in ongoing evaluations of student interpersonal and pre-professional skills to determine readiness for clinical field experiences/practicum and internship.
  • Assist with yearly auditions to evaluate students applying for admission to the music therapy program.
  • Maintain an active presence and involvement in music therapy professional organizations at state, regional, and national levels.
  • Accept additional duties reflecting institutional, departmental, and program needs.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Appropriate professional credential or designation in music therapy; record of continuing education in music therapy.
  • Master's degree in music therapy or related area, with a minimum of transcripted graduate credits equivalent to 12 semester hours or the equivalent of graduate credits in music therapy beyond the undergraduate equivalency requirements.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time clinical experience in music therapy or its equivalent in part-time work.
  • Record of continuing education relevant to his/her teaching responsibilities.
  • Mastery of all professional level and applicable advanced competencies in music therapy.
  • Effectiveness as a music therapy clinician in at least one area of practice.
  • Ability to teach and clinically supervise undergraduate students.
  • Suitable portfolio of research and creative activity with demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior undergraduate teaching/supervision experience.
  • Advanced clinical competence/expertise in at least one area of music therapy.
  • Knowledge/experience in clinical uses of technology.
