Essential Job FunctionsThe Special Education Teacher Specialist provides leadership, consultation, coaching, and technical assistance to staff serving students with disabilities from kindergarten through post‑high school programs. The position supports the implementation of evidence‑based instructional practices, compliance with state and federal special education requirements, and the provision of a free appropriate public education (FAPE) in the least restrictive environment.
- 1. Collaborate with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and other staff to ensure the delivery of specially designed instruction and appropriate supports for students with disabilities.
- 2. Serve as a resource and mentor to special education and general education personnel regarding instructional practices, behavior supports, accommodations, modifications, and compliance with special education requirements.
- 3. Provide coaching and ongoing support to teachers to improve instructional practices and student outcomes, especially in the early years of their career.
- 4. Assist teams in developing and implementing compliant individualized education programs (IEPs), behavior intervention plans, and transition plans.
- 5. Facilitate effective communication and collaboration among parents, school personnel, and outside agencies to support student success.
- 6. Model effective instructional strategies, specially designed instruction, and classroom management techniques in educational settings serving students from kindergarten through post‑high programs.
- 7. Support staff in implementing evidence‑based practices and differentiated instruction designed to meet individual student needs.
- 8. Observe classroom practices and provide constructive feedback to improve instructional effectiveness and fidelity of implementation.
- 9. Assist in the selection, implementation, and monitoring of accommodations, modifications, and interventions.
- 10. Provide consultation and guidance regarding positive behavior supports, classroom management, de‑escalation techniques, and behavioral interventions.
- 11. Assist teams in analyzing student data and developing strategies to address behavioral, academic, and functional needs.
- 12. Promote inclusive practices and support students in accessing educational opportunities within the least restrictive environment.
- 13. Maintain expert knowledge of federal and state special education laws, regulations, and district procedures.
- 14. Provide technical assistance to staff regarding eligibility, evaluation procedures, IEP development, progress monitoring, discipline procedures, manifestation determinations, transition requirements, and other special education processes.
- 15. Review and support the completion of special education documentation to ensure procedural compliance and educational benefit.
- 16. Assist administrators and school teams in resolving concerns and addressing complex student situations.
- 17. Attend IEP and Eligibility Meetings to support educators and serve as the LEA designee.
- 18. Plan, coordinate, and deliver professional development activities for teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and related service providers.
- 19. Facilitate meetings and collaborative problem‑solving processes with school personnel and families.
- 20. Coordinate services and programs with district personnel, community agencies, and other professionals to support students with disabilities.
- 21. Participate in district committees, leadership teams, and other activities that support continuous improvement in special education services.
- 22. Collect, analyze, and interpret student and program data to support educational decision‑making and continuous improvement efforts.
- 23. Use assessment information and progress‑monitoring data to assist staff in evaluating the effectiveness of instructional and behavioral interventions.
