Position Summary
The ESL Teacher provides English language instruction and support services to multilingual learners (MLs) to assist them in developing English proficiency and achieving academic success. The teacher collaborates with classroom teachers, administrators, parents, and support staff to ensure English learners have equitable access to educational opportunities and are able to meet state academic standards.
General Function StatementUnder the direction of the building principal and district administration, the ESL Teacher plans, organizes, and implements instructional programs designed to develop English language proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The teacher assesses student language acquisition needs, monitors student progress, collaborates with educators and families, and provides instructional support to ensure multilingual learners achieve academic success and language growth.
Essential Functions- Adapts classroom work for the purpose of providing students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Administers developmental testing programs, language proficiency assessments, subject‑specific assessments, and other evaluation tools for the purpose of assessing student competency levels and developing individual learning plans.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of communicating expectations, student achievements, language development goals, and strategies to support learning at home.
- Assesses student progress toward language proficiency standards, academic objectives, expectations, and goals for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents, and administration.
- Collaborates with instructional staff, other school personnel, parents, interpreters, and community resources for the purpose of improving student outcomes and achieving established instructional objectives in support of the school improvement plan.
- Counsels and supports students for the purpose of improving academic performance, language acquisition, school engagement, and social‑emotional well‑being.
- Demonstrates instructional methods and language development strategies required to perform classroom and subject‑specific assignments for the purpose of addressing individual student needs.
- Directs assistant teachers, instructional assistants, volunteers, student teachers, and other support personnel for the purpose of providing an effective instructional program and addressing student needs.
- Instructs students in English language development for the purpose of improving listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary acquisition, and academic language skills.
- Supports classroom teachers through consultation, co‑teaching, instructional planning, and implementation of language acquisition strategies.
- Manages student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
- Monitors students in a variety of educational environments (e.g., classroom, field trips, school activities) for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning environment.
- Participates in faculty meetings, IEP meetings, Multilingual Learner team meetings, professional development activities, parent conferences, and other meetings for the purpose of conveying and gathering information required to perform assigned responsibilities.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of written materials including language proficiency reports, student records, attendance, progress monitoring documentation, and required state and federal compliance reports.
- Maintains records and documentation required for state and federal multilingual learner programs.
- Reports incidents as needed for the purpose of maintaining student safety, providing a positive learning environment, and adhering to district policies and applicable laws.
