Library Technician Evening Manager

Join the Merrill-Cazier Library's Access Services team in serving students, faculty, staff, and community members and fostering a welcoming hub for curiosity, collaboration, and community at USU.

The Merrill-Cazier Library is seeking a Library Technician to serve as the Evening Manager. This position oversees library operations during evening and weekend hours, ensuring high-quality public service, supporting student employees, and responding to patron and facility needs. The Evening Manager exercises independent judgment to address operational challenges and works collaboratively with library personnel to support the library's mission of discovering, creating, and sharing knowledge and diverse perspectives.

Reporting to the Head of Access Services, this is a full-time, benefited Library Technician position with a minimum salary of $43,000. The typical schedule is Sunday 12:00 p.m.

-9:00 p.m. and Monday through Thursday 3:00 p.m.

-12:00 a.m. Evening and weekend work is required, and hours may vary based on library hours, university calendars, holidays, and departmental needs.

Responsibilities
  • Oversees library operations during evening and weekend hours, ensuring safe, efficient, and customer-focused service.
  • Coordinates Access Services operations, including circulation services, technology support, and other departmental workflows.
  • Provides leadership, training, and day-to-day supervision of student employees.
  • Exercises independent judgment to resolve patron service, facility, and operational issues, escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Collaborates with library personnel to ensure continuity of services and support library initiatives.
  • Participates in committees, projects, and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two years of library experience or an associate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a public service environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, and community members.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Word, Excel) and ability to learn new systems and technologies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising, training, or mentoring student employees or staff.
  • Experience in an academic library or complex public service environment.
  • Experience with integrated library systems or library service technologies.
  • Experience resolving patron service issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience coordinating operational workflows or service points.

Work is performed indoors in an open office environment with shared cubicle work spaces. Employees are protected from weather and contaminants but may experience occasional temperature changes. The position requires prolonged sitting, frequent computer use and repetitive hand motions (such as typing), as well as regular walking, talking, and hearing. The position also requires occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of library materials and the ability to move loaded book carts.
