OverviewThe High Voltage Electrician and Onsite Power Generator Technician SR performs skilled journeymen-level work involving the installation, operation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of campus electrical distribution systems and emergency power generation equipment. Responsibilities include maintaining medium- and high-voltage electrical infrastructure, substations, transformers, switch gear, diesel generators, automatic transfer switches, and associated control systems. The position ensures reliable campus power distribution while maintaining compliance with all applicable safety, electrical, environmental, and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities- Maintain and repair medium and high voltage (12.47 kV) distribution systems including substations, switch gear, transformers, protective relays, and associated emergency power system.
- Performs work in accordance with OSHA, NFPA 70E, NEC and University safety requirements.
- Respond to electrical outages and emergency power system failures during schedule and unscheduled events.
- Participates in lockout/tagout (LOTO), switching procedures, and arc-flash safety programs.
- Conducts hazard assessments prior to performing all work.
- Repairs and maintenance of automatic transfer switches.
- Supports the diesel generator technician with testing of generators and automatic transfer switches.
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety, efficiency, and environmental practices.
- Cleans equipment, shop area and work site.
- Keeps detailed and up to date records on all repairs and maintenance.
- Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Third year lineman apprentice, or third year substation technician.
- Minimum of 10 years directly related work experience with high voltage electricity.
- Journeyman Electrician license and/or 5-10 years of experience in high-voltage electrical distribution systems, substations, or industrial electrical maintenance.
- Skill in the use of various hand and power tools common to the trade.
- Basic computer skills.
- Customer service skills.
- Ability to create, read, understand, and build to specifications from blue prints and schematic drawings.
- Ability to work without supervision.
- Ability to service and maintain diesel engine generators.
- Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers and customers.
- Ability to follow directions.
- Ability to travel to statewide campuses throughout the year.
- Comprehensive knowledge of all state electrical, safety, EPA and fire codes.
- Knowledge and skill in low and high voltage power systems.
