Position: Battery Management Systems (BMS) Lead

Overview

At Electric Power Systems, Inc. (EPS), our mission is to advance, connect, and protect our world with unmatched energy innovation. We're leading the charge in creating smarter, safer, and more reliable energy storage solutions for aerospace and defense applications. From designing lightweight, certifiable batteries to advancing the frontier of electric propulsion, our team is shaping the future of mobility. We're looking for a Battery Management Systems (BMS) Lead who's ready to take a hands-on role in developing the next generation of high-performance battery systems.

Responsibilities

In this role, you ll serve as a technical leader in the design, implementation, and validation of EPS s advanced battery management controls. You ll work at the intersection of model-based design, embedded software, and system-level integration, bringing together engineering precision and creative problem-solving to ensure our systems meet the highest standards for performance, safety, and certification. If you re passionate about developing reliable control systems that make flight electrification possible, this is an opportunity to make a direct impact.

As the BMS Lead, you ll guide the technical development of our control features, from charge and discharge management to balancing and fault handling. You ll translate complex system requirements into software specifications and develop testable models that bring our designs to life. Using MATLAB, Simulink, and model-based workflows, you ll build and refine algorithms that manage cell and pack behavior, simulate aging and thermal effects, and ensure optimal performance in demanding environments.

Your work will help define how our batteries think and respond in real time, ensuring every system we deliver is not just innovative but dependable.

You ll also play a key role in developing state estimation and diagnostic algorithms, leveraging techniques like Coulomb counting and Kalman filters to accurately track State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH). Whether you re tuning fault detection logic or validating control strategies through simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, you ll combine theoretical depth with practical execution. Experience with tools like dSPACE, Speedgoat, or NI platforms will help you seamlessly bridge the gap between modeling and reality.

Collaboration is central to success  ll work closely with systems engineers, software developers, and hardware teams to integrate your designs into complete energy storage systems. Along the way, you ll ensure compliance with aerospace standards such as DO-178C and DO-311A and support the documentation, verification, and calibration efforts that keep our technology certifiable and ready for flight. As a technical mentor, you ll help guide junior engineers, sharing your expertise and fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.

Qualifications

We re looking for someone with a strong foundation in electrical, computer, or controls engineering with a bachelor s degree and at least five years of experience in embedded control systems or battery management. You should be comfortable developing in MATLAB/Simulink and C, with a working knowledge of ARM Cortex-M microcontrollers and communication protocols like CAN, SPI, and I2C. Experience in safety-critical software, algorithm validation, and model-based development will set you up for success.

A master s degree, along with familiarity in Simscape Electrical, Simulink Requirements, or aerospace certification practices, is a plus. Knowledge of configuration tools such as Git, Bitbucket, or JIRA, as well as FMU/FMI or CAN calibration concepts, will help you excel in our fast-paced, collaborative environment.
