Job DescriptionThe Respiratory Therapist (RRT) provides advanced‑level respiratory care to patients, diagnosing, evaluating, treating, managing, and controlling cardiopulmonary deficiencies within the physician's order. The RRT acts as a resource to the CRT staff and may handle specialised clinical projects as directed by leadership.
Essential Functions- Performs, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic testing procedures according to protocol; obtains arterial gases; oversees equipment operation for optimal patient care; initiates respiratory protocols and interventions based on assessment interpretations.
- Administers medications safely and evaluates effects, re‑evaluating per protocol; ensures patient progress is communicated to staff, physicians, and other departments.
- Maintains awareness of assigned patient condition; communicates information with physicians and nurses; makes appropriate care recommendations; recognises educational needs of patients and families; teaches self‑care techniques.
- Completes documentation per departmental standards; accurately records productivity; monitors supplies and equipment; notifies appropriate personnel when supplies are low, on loan, or broken; uses time effectively to meet productivity standards.
- Participates in quality and patient safety initiatives; identifies improvement areas and safety hazards; takes appropriate actions; attends departmental meetings, contributing ideas or feedback.
- Promotes respiratory care profession, acting as a resource, consultant, and mentor; participates in quality improvement and research activities with the Respiratory Care Team.
- May float to other departments within scope of competency and qualifications based on business need.
- May be required to be on‑call during a scheduled shift.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Graduate of a NBRC approved Respiratory Therapist program from an accredited institution; degree will be verified.
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with the National Board for Respiratory Care.
- Current state licence for Registered Respiratory Therapy.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers.
- Specific certifications as required (e.g., PALS, ACLS, NRP).
- Ongoing need to see, read, and assess patient information, labels, equipment, and supplies.
- Frequent interaction with patient care providers, patients, and visitors, requiring verbal communication and rapid comprehension, especially during emergencies.
- Manual dexterity for manipulating complex equipment, frequent computer use, typing, and documentation.
- Expected to lift, transfer patients, and manipulate supplies, often up to heavy items.
- Required to walk, assist with ambulating patients, and transport equipment, including pushing/pulling gurneys and navigating busy rooms.
- May need to stand for extended periods.
