ASL/English Interpreter Mentor

The ASL/English Interpreter Mentor provides guidance, coaching, and professional development support to interpreters seeking to improve their linguistic, ethical, cultural, and professional competencies. The mentor works collaboratively with novice, developing, and experienced interpreters to strengthen interpreting skills, increase confidence, and promote adherence to professional standards and best practices. The mentor conducts comprehensive assessments, facilitates individual mentoring sessions, and provides performance feedback.

The mentor may also develop and deliver training opportunities as requested and as resources permit.

Must have evening availability.

This position is telework-eligible within the state of Utah. Telework outside of the state of Utah is subject to review and approval by the University prior to a job offer being extended.

Responsibilities

Mentoring and Professional Development

  • Provide one-on-one and group mentoring to ASL/English interpreters.
  • Assess interpreters' strengths and areas for growth through observation and feedback.
  • Develop individualized professional development plans.
  • Facilitate skill-building activities related to receptive and expressive interpreting.
  • Support interpreters in establishing goals and achieving professional growth.
  • Guide interpreters in preparing for certification assessments and performance evaluations.
  • Observe interpreting assignments, recorded work samples, and simulated scenarios.
  • Provide comprehensive, constructive feedback using evidence-based mentoring practices.
  • Assist interpreters in identifying effective strategies for improvement.
  • Track progress toward established learning objectives and professional development goals.
  • Support ethical decision-making and maintenance of professional boundaries.

Deaf Community and Cultural Competence

  • Promote engagement with Deaf communities and Deaf-centered environments.
  • Support the development of Deaf cultural competence.
  • Model effective collaboration with Deaf professionals and consumers.
  • Encourage ethical, respectful, and culturally responsive interpreter-consumer relationships.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Maintain mentoring attendance records, professional development plans, and progress notes.
  • Prepare evaluation reports and recommendations, as required.
  • Monitor and evaluate participant outcomes and progress.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • National and/or state interpreter certification.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of professional ASL/English interpreting experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in ASL and English language fluency.
  • Strong knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf community perspectives.
  • Experience providing coaching, training, mentoring, supervision, or instruction.
  • Experience conducting comprehensive interpreter skill assessments.
  • Experience using online meeting platforms and remote mentoring strategies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Advanced ASL and English proficiency.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles and mentoring/coaching methodologies.
  • Proficiency with technology and virtual communication tools.
  • Strong understanding of interpreter ethics and professional standards.
  • Demonstration of performance assessment, evaluation, and feedback techniques.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback in a supportive and professional manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Conflict resolution and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with Deaf and hearing team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional judgment.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and lifelong learning.
