Overview

The Histology/Necropsy Lab Technician II will serve approximately 50% time in each of the necropsy and histology laboratories (total 100% time) of the Utah Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Training will be provided by the department for the two areas.

Responsibilities Necropsy laboratory
  • Assist the on-duty pathologist in conducting postmortem examinations on deceased animals.
  • Keep the necropsy laboratory clean and stocked.
Histology laboratory
  • Embed tissues as necessary.
  • Section and stain tissues.
  • Perform special stains as requested.
  • Maintain operation of tissue processors/other equipment.
Qualifications Minimum Qualification
  • Two years of experience; or an associate degree/vocational training; or an equivalent combination of education plus experience.

Work environment is indoors working with fresh and formalin-fixed animal organs/tissues. Exposure to animal organs and bodily fluids. Need to be able to lift 40 lbs and move about for prolonged periods of time. Attention to detail and fine motor skills required.

The Histology/Necropsy Technician will be joining the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) at an exciting point of transformation. In 2022 the state of Utah approved the creation of a full four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree program  CVM has received approval through its accrediting agency, the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education, to admit its inaugural class of 40 students in the fall of 2025, and cohorts of 80 veterinary students in subsequent years.
