Position Summary

The Autism Teacher (ASD) provides specialized instruction for students with significant needs on the autism spectrum who follow an adapted curriculum. This role focuses on developing communication, functional, academic, and life skills within a supportive classroom environment that promotes growth, independence, and confidence.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and deliver individualized instruction aligned with students’ IEP goals and the GCPS Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum.
  • Adapt lessons, materials, and environments to meet each learner’s unique needs.
  • Implement behavioral and instructional strategies that encourage participation, communication, and self-regulation.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, and support staff to ensure coordinated support.
  • Monitor and document student progress through observation and data collection.
  • Communicate regularly with families and participate in IEP meetings.
  • Support students’ physical and personal care needs, ensuring a safe and respectful environment.
  • Engage in ongoing professional learning and contribute to school initiatives.

License and Certification: Must meet or be willing to meet Georgia certification requirements in Special Education.

Education: Bachelor’s degree from a Professional Standards Commission (PSC) approved college or university required.

Experience: Previous teaching or work-related experience preferred.

Skills
  • Deep understanding of instructional strategies for students with significant autism support needs.
  • Knowledge of IDEA and due process procedures.
  • Ability to use technology effectively to support learning and communication.
  • Excellent collaboration, organization, and communication skills.
