Position Purpose
The Social Worker's primary function is to assist students who are experiencing social or emotional difficulties in the school environment. This person acts as an advocate for students who need assistance in acquiring social skills that are critical to academic success. The Social Worker must be an excellent communicator who is willing and able to involve parents and classroom teachers in supporting the modifications and accommodations designed to assist their children.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

- Identifying students in need of small group or individual social or emotional interventions using assessment data and addressing identified student needs.
- Screening students to establish proper interventions.
- Serving as a resource to classroom teachers and content-area specialists.
- Coaching and assisting teachers in organizing their academic programs, selecting materials, implementing teaching techniques, and in relating their instructional program to the special needs of individual students.
- Providing professional development support in the implementation of research-based best practices.
- Maintaining frequent communication with the school principal and parents regarding students' social, emotional, and academic needs.
- Assist in grief counseling with students and staff, as necessary.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction and student learning.
- Conducts ongoing assessments of student learning and modifies instructional methods to accommodate individual student's needs.
- Conducts individual and small group interventions as needed.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and to learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement, and attendance as required by district and school procedures and applicable laws.
- Establishes and maintains a standard of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Participates in faculty meetings and committees.
- Understands and adheres to principles and tenets of the Catholic faith; as well as maintaining a lifestyle that is in full accord with Church teachings both within and outside of the school environment.
- Assisting with meetings of the school Teacher Assistance Team and teaching, coaching, leading, and overseeing social / emotional interventions designed by this Team.
- Planning and implementing Response to Intervention (RtI) strategies and must be willing to assume a leadership role in assessing students and in designing programs and services to meet their individual needs.
- Additional duties as assigned by the principal and/or Catholic Schools Office Administrators.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods related to social work services.
- Knowledge and practice of the Catholic faith.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis procedures, and the formulation of data-informed interventions.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to clearly communicate with all constituents including (but not limited to); administration of Saint Pius X Catholic School, pastors, parish priests, colleagues, students, parents, and prospective parents.
- Must have a master's degree or higher from a graduate school of social work accredited by the Council on Social Work Education and have completed an approved program with a specialization in school social work.
- Internship experience of at least 600 contact hours in a school setting.
- 400 hours of field experience supervised by a field instructor holding a master's or higher degree in social work.
- Certification/Licensure:
The candidate must hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL), endorsed as a School Social Worker. - Previous experience in utilizing differentiation strategies to meet the instructional and social-emotional needs of individual learners preferred.
- Exceptional classroom management and communication skills are essential to success in this role.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently be required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, feel with hands, reach with arms, walk up or down multiple flights of stairs, and be physically able to perform duties as assigned, including the ability to lift up to 20-30 pounds if needed.
