The Village of Lombard is seeking a part-time Code Enforcement Inspector in the Community Development Department. The inspector will be responsible for ensuring public health, safety, and welfare by enforcing municipal codes, building codes, zoning code, property inspections, investigating complaints, issuing citations, educating and providing citizens with information, and working with other departments. This position is a fast-paced customer service position.
The position is generally performed independently, under the direction of the Code Enforcement Coordinator. This position will adhere in a manner consistent with the Village’s Code Enforcement Manual, adopted policies and procedures. Must provide excellent communication, and customer service skills, and the ability to work productively and effectively with residents and employees in a professional manner.
Perform inspections of residential and commercial property, investigate complaints and violations, taking necessary corrective action to ensure compliance with municipal codes and ordinances. Primary focus being the International Property Maintenance Code, general regulations, land usage provisions, and other applicable sections of Village Code as warranted.
Responds to requests from the public, addresses online requests and emails, identify non-compliant situations under Village jurisdiction, either through visual field inspections or other adopted methods; along with securing authorization from relevant or applicable parties to inspect properties. Research activities pertaining to reported service requests using available Village technology and field inspection efforts; schedule and perform inspections; collect relevant property owner and tenant data as necessary.
The employee will have contact with other Village employees, property owners, agents, tenants, and contractors. Employees will work with other departments which may include Police, Fire and Public Works.
Act as a primary education resource to the public relative to the property codes and other ordinances verbally, in person, through electronic means and in writing to assist public in understanding code requirements and processes for compliance in a fast-paced customer service-oriented environment. Will need to have the ability to multitask.
Prepares and issues notification letters and other notices as warranted, stop work orders, violation letters and tickets for Circuit Court or Administrative Adjudication; prepares case summaries and evidence; performs pre-court inspections; maintains detailed records, prepares, presents evidence and testifies in Court or Adjudication as needed.
The successful candidate will have the ability to understand and implement codes, possess excellent communication skills and effective utilization of Village computer field technology, computer hardware and software to meet the demands.
The ability to effectively communicate through written and verbal means to successfully solve problems and work with property owners to achieve code compliance is paramount to the position.
Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, along with three to five years of code enforcement experience with a focus upon property maintenance and/or building codes; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the requisite knowledge skills and abilities for this job, along with passage of the International Property Maintenance & Housing Inspector certification requirements within 6 months of employment.
Job requires possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license.
The hourly salary range is $32.37/hr-$46.02/hr . The position is intended to be 24 hours a week between Monday and Friday and every other Saturday and would be mutually set to meet work obligations. The position may also require flexibility to occasionally work outside of a traditional work schedule (evening or a weekend) in order to meet the demands of the position.
