Overview

The City of Lombard’s Fire Department employs 64 full-time sworn personnel, including a Chief, three Battalion Chiefs, 12 lieutenants, and 48 firefighters, operating two stations with a $17.4 million budget. In 2025, the department responded to 8,220 incidents, including 117 fires and 6,224 EMS calls. The department holds an ISO rating of 2.

Responsibilities

Respond to emergency situations and direct fire and rescue operations. Coordinate emergency preparedness activities for large‑scale emergencies, investigate fire causes, and submit required reports. Interpret and administer the collective bargaining agreement, personnel manual, and fire protection codes. Act as liaison between the village and its citizens. Represent the village in meetings with governmental agencies, professional and business organizations, and the public, including regular attendance at night meetings and village events.

Report directly to the Village Manager and serve on the Village’s executive management team.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, Fire Protection/Safety, Fire Engineering, or related field; master’s degree preferred.
  • Seven to nine years of progressively responsible experience in firefighting, fire rescue, fire prevention, and education, with three to five years of supervisory experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities; CFO or EFO highly desired.
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in all principles and practices of fire department operations and administration theory and techniques.
  • Experience as an innovative, collaborative fire/EMS leader with demonstrated staff management, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships with surrounding Fire/EMS agencies for comprehensive, balanced high‑level services for residents.
  • Well‑developed writing and public speaking skills and the utmost integrity.
  • A clear and dynamic vision for providing excellent, proactive emergency services.
  • A willingness to embrace a high‑performance organization.
Residency

Residency is not required; candidates must live within thirty miles of the village boundary within 12 months of the start date.

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary range: $139,600 – $195,438, with an anticipated starting salary of $167,000 plus the mid‑point adjustment. An attractive benefits package is offered.
