About the RoleThis is a hands‑on CNC machining role for someone who designs the cut and stands there while it happens. You will program, set up, prove out, and troubleshoot complex parts—
primarily on large Vertical Turning Lathes (VTLs). This is not a desk‑only CAM role and not a management position
.
- Perform hands-on CNC programming, setup, and prove-out
- Program using CAM software (Fusion 360 preferred); support post development and optimization
- Select tooling, feeds/speeds, probing, and work-holding strategies
- Support first‑article success on tight‑tolerance, high‑value components
- Troubleshoot machining issues in real time, including chatter, distortion, thermal growth, and alignment
- Support prototype, R&D, and low‑volume production machining
- Partner with Engineering and Quality during early part development
- Develop setup sheets, tool lists, and proven process documentation
- Support configuration control and revision management
- Drive process improvements that reduce scrap, rework, and iteration time
- Comfortable working full‑time on the shop floor in a forging environment
- Proven experience machining large, complex components (30”+ diameter) on Vertical Turning Lathes
- 8+ years of hands‑on CNC machining and programming experience of multi‑axis lathes and mills
- Experience machining aerospace alloys
- Solid blueprint reading and GD&T proficiency
- Strong fixture design & work‑holding experience
- Excellent communication and job coordination skills
- Ability to lift 50 lbs; experience operating cranes and forklifts
- Engineering degree a plus
- Prototype or short‑run machining background
- CMM inspection knowledge
Experience transitioning parts from prototype to production
- Specific VTL machines you’ve operated (brand, size, control type)
- Setup responsibilities (chucking, fixturing, tooling, offsets)
- Programming experience (at the machine vs. CAM + software & years experience) and responsibility (editing existing programs vs. writing programs from scratch vs. full process development)
- Examples of complex parts you have independently set up and programmed
- Tolerance ranges held
- Part size/weight range
- Production vs. job shop environment
- Willingness to work on the floor, at the machine, in a forging environment
Providing detailed information will help us properly evaluate senior‑level candidates and move qualified applicants forward quickly.
