Position: News Reporter / Journalist – Local Journalism Initiative
Location: Southwestern OntarioAbout the Role
FM 985 is seeking a motivated and community-focused Local Journalism Initiative (LJI) Journalist to produce original journalism that serves the public interest within the Waterloo Region. This position is funded through the Government of Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative and is dedicated to covering important local issues.
The successful candidate will focus on fact-based reporting that strengthens local accountability, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities Daily news reporting and anchoring.Report on municipal council meetings, school boards, court proceedings, and other civic events within Waterloo Region.Develop story ideas that reflect the needs and concerns of citizens in the Region.Conduct interviews with public officials, community leaders, and residents.Produce accurate, balanced, and ethical journalism in accordance with journalistic standards.Meet regular deadlines and manage multiple assignments.Collaborate with other staff to refine stories.Publish content across broadcast platforms as required.Qualifications
Degree or diploma in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent broadcast experience.Solid understanding of Burli Newsroom, Adobe Audition and iMediatouch an asset.Lead production of news content for web and radio.Strong news judgment and storytelling skills.Excellent writing, research, and interviewing abilities.Knowledge of municipal government, civic processes, and public institutions an asset.Ability to work independently and take initiative.Strong organizational and time-management skills.Familiarity with Canadian Press style and journalistic ethics.Digital skills, including content management systems and social media, are an asset.Valid Drivers license.What We Offer
